When the first mission happens, where kurono and kato get into gantz. Nishi says something about them being specially selected, and kurono has a flashback about the grandma at the train station. Is there any meaning to this?

Nishi was simply lying. Tho' there is a possibility that they were specially selected. 'How? And on what basis?' Is the question.
there is a little selection and thats the time they die.
if they die in a special timeframe the chance is big, that they get into the Gantz-room, but i think there is no other thing exept of the time....maybe the place, but I'm not so sure....also i think that they got to die on a unnatural way, for exampel suicide, carcrash, run over by a train,etc...

Kurono thinks the weird old woman may have been the person who was supposed to tell him about his selection.
Whether or not Nishi was at all truthful is unknown, as is pretty much always the case.

How can you be so sure, Tet? At this point of the manga (Ch237), We haven't had a chance to hear Nshi tell us anything useful after being revived because the person who was going to interrogate him, Kurono, was brainwashed and later killed.Quote:

Tho' through deduction, and using what has been shown in the manga thus far. Nishi's comment about somebody talking to you before you die, and being specially selected, does not apply to characters such as Kaze, or Cherry. I do realise however that Izumi was told to get people, so they were somewhat selected. But if you look at other characters deaths, like the biker, and especially Takeshi, you will see that nobody had spoken to them prior.
I'm not denying that i could be wrong.
i would say that a lot of people believed the old lady was an important factor in gantz selection. At least a while back they did anyway. Even the Anime directors thought so. Didn't they play up the old lady's role a lot more than the original Manga did? for example in the Anime didn't she confront Krono again after his death in the train accident?Quote:

His apparant cause of death is vague to say the least. He never said he died of cancer just that he was in the hospital for cancer. He was trying to control the Gantzers to his own benefit.
I disagree with Mellow_Yellow. It is true that at a certain point it seemed as though Hiroya Oku had ran out of plot material. I dont think he did so early on the story.
Also, if you look at any other great mangas, the author's have only planned the story so far, and never expected it to become such a great success, and therefore run out of material and dawdle for some time and sometimes even changing their original ideas.
Examples are: Naruto, DeathNote, and lately i ve come to think that even BERSERK falls into this category.
