maybe he's just saving his own ass. he comes to earth looking for sanctuary but the aliens found him, so now he collects dead people to kill them all.

I reckon gantz is some 30 year old man who just wears a jock strap and messes with people for kicks... there seems to be a lot of them around, or maybe I'm hanging around in the wrong places....

I'm not sure I'd say "foe" to humanity in general. That said, I can't justify "friend", largely from the fact that many of the aliens (particularly early on) are initially nonaggressive and disclaim knowledge of the ball's motivations (not that they know it's the ball, of course). When you combine that with the total lack of guidance Gantz provides (and the deceptive nature of its mission briefings), it's hard to justify any claim that it wants the Gantzers to succeed—at times, IIRC, it even roots for the death of certain people.

It's arguable that it sends Gantzers against nonaggressive aliens to get them used to the idea of shooting first rather than in self-defense, and that it provides no guidance in order to get stronger people who will figure it out and survive on their own. Still, that's unconvincing—people it knows are strong have been allowed to die in the game.

I wouldent be able to give a streight answer either, at time it's like aliens are bad kill um and at other's it's like go kill the short otaku girl that for some reason is winning of the busty model.

Actually, that's the only mission we have a clear reason for. She saw a Gantzer, if only for a second. All of the other missions, we've got no clear reason for, and it looks like Gantz doesn't even care if they're successful or not.

Still, he can't have cared too much about Tae—he still put a time limit on the mission.

The theory has merit, because the aliens would be saying that they aren't trying to hurt anyone, but maybe they are just peacefully trying to bring back the Gantz to their world. But it has already been established that there are multiple Gantz' out there, so it seems unlikely. To me, the Kishimoto malfunction speaks volumes. I think Gantz is supposed to be an ally, but it's malfunctioning, or perhaps a real person is attached to it (the old man inside), and that person is tainting the normal functions of the Gantz. This whole thing with the Gantz and aliens can be likened to a forced draft in a war with aliens.
