each individual have their perspectives developed based on the environment they grew up in.... it would be laughable if an individual only considered his own perspective the correct one..because that would just lead to conflicts with other people..

all perspectives are valid considering Gantz, whether it's the entertainment value, sex, gore, or morality of it.

hmmm.. just to give you a perspective from a japanese point of view (i'm japanese), in japan, among young people/adults, we commonly see two different categories of people. One category is people with determination and goals. The other category is of people without determination and goals. The people with determination and goals strive for good jobs. The people without determination, you see a lot of them just hanging around all day smoking with their friends. You see a lot of them at shibuya and at parks 'n such. It is really hard to imagine what it's like in Japan without actually visiting there. The streets are just crowded with people and it becomes really easy to lose yourself (identity) in that dense population. Many people feel like they're insignificant since they're only one ant in an army of many. You see a lot of gangs and violence as groups of these no-determination individuals group together. Life just melts from one day to the next, each day just spent outside sitting around, smoking with friends. Life has no meaning to a lot of them and you see them going around bullying people. You also see alot of girls just walking up to you and asking you if you want to have a 'high' w/ her (have sex....but obviously for a small fee....unless you're handsome... i've been asked a few times b4.) Gantz does address some of the issues that young people in japan are faced with (and frustrated with) in terms of life and morality. Not to offend anyone, but compared to japan, cities in western societies look like countrysides...... if you get a chance, please visit Japan. I'm not saying japan is bad, because I love japan....but just that it's a completely different environment that'll open your eyes for sure. Please be aware that this is only one side of japan...i hope i'm not painting a really bad picture of japan.. there's good sides to it too.

I'm 30 and totally engrossed in the storyline.
Good god there are dinosaurs and they're talking.
And then Izumi pulls a sword out of his suit and it grows big enough to slice the tri-top completely in half.....OMG!!!

diegomatrix: I was planning to visit japan in the summer holidays, but i guess i'll need more preparation that i thought =P

Gantz... i agree the sex and violence is quite entertaining, especially the earlier missions... onion dude, the buddhas... what can i say, i was rather surprised to see a manga having such scenes.

but also gantz is interesting for its story line, its just so god damn random. im pretty sure if anyone was just looking for some nudity and sexual exposure, their first preference is porn.

what i find fun about gantz is how it explores kurono's mind, it shows a pretty realistic human being, while giving him some heroic characteristics. (at least before the vampires appeared, its all about how kurono thinks, im not that sure about it anymore) i mean things are pretty messed up right now, no friggin clue what the mangaka is trying to pull.

guess i'll have to wait and see

I too find it becoming nonsensical
lol, you link to a thread where you make a ridiculous claim, and then Hadou owns you in it but you keep fighting. Hadou's response is very plausible but you just wont let it go.

The fact that you can ask a question like that and get different answers proves that Gantz has plenty going on beneath the surface.

If you are reading something for over 200 chapters just for blood and sex, thats pretty pathetic. Go watch La Blue Girl.

Gantz has sex and gore, and that's a part of it, yeah

    a part people like, but...

It's just done right, it's a fun story, that's why I like it. There's other stuff out there with plenty of sex and/or gore, but can be shitty 'cause it's, well, shitty, not well written, not well executed, etc.

    Gantz is entertaining.

Fun I don't think is the word to it. Entertaining to the point where your pulling your hair out hoping that somethings not gonna happen but you know it will, yes that kind of entertainment.

GANTZ is generating a lot of arguing between you people, and in a way taths just good so, isn't it?

but i have one thing to tell, you know: GANTZ is "made" mainly for a group of male's. 'cause it's a shonen manga, isn't it? the age group target is between sophomore and 24 (i think). that means that actually it is not restricted or what. but it is (in view of the story and the content) for male's (of course). and nudity is for a 13-16yo dude something -- interesting and intensivley motivating, not. and when a god story line is made with crazy happenings an random like threads, whit social and ethical confrontings to te reader + fighting + gore + action + it's heroic too. like life but absoltuely magnified and amplified. so it is ( IN MY OPINION ) a very entertaining manga with something for everyone ( who is not a strange homosexual, old woman) so everyone can find GANTZ interesting and entertaining, from different points of view points (just like by mostly every manga/anime) XD

by the way I am 19, and male. - university dude from hungary. and I like GANTZ a lot.
BUT I like BLAME! a lot MORE!!!!
where did ya get that gun?

I enjoy Gantz for how it can be entertaining, yet complex and analytical of society and moralities. Blood & gore can be found in other mangas and other outlets too, but Gantz executes them nicely and purposely. Not that other mangas fail at doing that, but Gantz has a different feel. So many things happen in there that are unexpected (except death).

Gantz also challenges traditional story telling. Kurono is not your typical hero. He doesn't even start off as a likeable character. If you look at normal stories, it would probably be someone more selfless like Katou (although he's quite oversensitive at times). But then Gantz kills him off. Here, the good guys don't always win. Also the aliens that they fight aren't clearly the bad guys. In other mangas, usually the villains are clearly evil. The author is also playing on the stereotypical love interest of the hero. Kishimoto, "Lara Croft" and Reika are the typical good looking girls that end up w/the hero. Instead, Kurono falls in love w/a girl who is incredibly plain. Someone who doesn't even make a grand appearance. When I first saw her, I just thought she was an insignificant character who wasn't going show up again (besides, she looks like she's 10).

In other words, Gantz is entertaining, but not mindless entertainment. So yeah, those are my reasons for liking Gantz as a 23 year old female. No, I'm not butched, and I do enjoy shopping and eating sweets.
