Excuse my English, I\'m French!
Uh... I agree that the black guys dying in Gantz was so minor I'd hardly call it racist. But why has no one but Devilman X mentioned Izumi's stunt of disguising himself as a black guy before murdering a few hundred people? If I were going to call Gantz racist, that's what I'd focus on... not the few black guys who died from the vampires.Originally Posted by PupRA
Izumi's little stunt is certainly meant to portray an ethnic group in negative light. It's one of the most shockingly racist things that I've seen in a manga (though I will admit I haven't read a whole lot of manga). However, Gantz does it's best to shock us with gore and also does it's best to shock us with sudden plot twists and character deaths. So why not throw in some shocking racism? It was most likely done for shock value, not because the author is racist. I also detected a note of cynicism; it seemed as though the author was pointing out that Japan would have a much easier time blaming a foriegner for a massacre like that than a native Japanese person.
It certainly shocked the hell out of me. Funny how some black makeup magically made him look like a completely different person.
1st place for racist images in a manga: Blackface Izumi's killing spree
2nd place for racist images in a manga: Chocolove's origin story (woo boy!)
The booby prize goes to Hajime no Ippo vol. 4 Round 28: Black Boxer. Aoki san paints himself as a blackman to help Ippo train for his upcoming match. A very funny scene actually.
*New edit*
Anyone else found it strange that Izumi seemed absolutely clueless about the two psychic boys powers during their face off in chaptes 178 and 179. I mean, they fought once before during Izumi's rampage.
Forever searching...
Well being a black guy...i didnt take any offense to reading Gantz or felt that Gantz was racist at all. I just figured that the black guys died because they were outta place...and if they were really black guys they wudda ran away cuz we dont stick around for danger lol. But against dino's they probably would've died. Everyone dies in Gantz even the elderly and little children.
Unfortunately i have to hand it to Izumi with the massacre because by choosing a black guy the police have no choice but to assume it was a black man. So that means they have to look hard especially in japan or can only guess its a foreigner. I hate to say it and it is fucked up...but its a damn smart maneuver. Im surprised no one in america tried doing that yet.............or have they???
The only example that comes to mind of that being done in America is when a white supremacist tries to rape a teacher disguising himself as a black man in the movie The Principal.
So yeah, it's been done already. Maybe more.
lol ooohhh yeaaa I forgot about that one. Well thats one for the record books...so most likely theres more.
I know its a cliche to say "why the black guy had to, such and such..." but why the black guy had to have his neck slit and his blood drank by the vampire? Oh well, i'm just grasping straws now.
So, who exactly was the white guy who appeared in Gantz? Kinda hard for me to figure out, what with all the non-Japanese looking Japanese people in Gantz.
Forever searching...
i've realized that before also...why is it that all the japanese people in Gantz look white? I thought it was just me that thought that...but i guess i was wrongOriginally Posted by Devilman X
WTF the person who stated this thread is stupid , imean everyone dies in gantz, qiute gruesumly too. how can you say every black person? theres only been like 4 and they came in a group, this is just a useless thread
They do, a significant amount of them wish they were white, and a significant amount of their women want to marry white men.Originally Posted by Devilman X
When the World Cup was held there, members of their congress (or parliament, I don't know the actual name) projected a rise in rape and crime as foreigners were going to enter the country. Parts, mostly in the north, began putting up "no foreigners allowed" signs to their establishments.
America's had the same problems with media portrayal of different ethnicities. Look at Tom Clancy novels, today it's China that's the big bad red machine, a few years ago that was Russia. Go to the 80's, there's plenty of movies with sinister Japanese corporate samurai ready to pounce on America. How many weak Asian characters are there in American media? Tons.
Look at how publically and acceptable it is to hate anything French.
Doesn't justify any of it though. I'm just saying that it's not 'uncommon' for Japan to show foreigners in a negative light.
Though I don't think Gantz really does that anyways. In Gantz, those black dudes were no more incompetent than the many many Japanese character who've already died in more gruesome ways.
