The ending of the anime did NOT suck

The ending was horrid.
It tried to explain Gantz as something personal, related to Kurono, but it failed. The final scene was a pure Bebop-ripoff. The last episode was like one long slap to the face. Probably the most insulting moment was when the idiot writers decided to politicize Gantz. I almost stopped the episode right then and there. Politics in entertainment is fine, as long as it makes sense in context. Using Gantz as an outlet for Bush-bashing, though? What the hell?!? The final arc was terrible and nonsensical. Gantz had no real reason to want Kurono dead. Even if he DID, he could simply detonate the head-bomb. There was no reason for what Gantz did. It was little more than a glorified McGuffin. The characters...blech. They were not interesting. The manga went the proper route after the Buddha mission. Furthermore, Kurono's behavior didn't make sense. The Kurono we knew after the Buddha mission would have realized saving the two psychos would be impossible. He would have blown them away, and we know he could have. We know full well that bullets don't do jack shit to Gantz suits. The bit was proven long ago. In short, Gantz's final arc and ending sucked. Every time I tell people to watch Gantz, I tell them to skip the last arc and read the manga instead. They're better served that way.

I feel the same way... when I think of the anime in the context of the manga. The anime as a standalone piece of work is very good, right down to the end. I also didn't like the political stuff near the end, but on the whole people should separate the anime from the manga. A manga is the work of primarily one person; it's their idea, their brainchild. That person or whoever owns the rights sells it to an anime company, and although most of the time they stay as faithful as possible to the original concept, some deviation is to be expected. Sometimes it comes off well, sometimes no according to how it is received. Gantz the manga is better than the anime but that's as far a comparison as i'm willing to do of two different mediums. I appreciate the fact that people say that if the manga story ain't broke, then don't fix it but I want something new, something different, a new interpretation of the original idea.
The concept of the anime was Gantz as Kurono's own grim reaper, I guess. The writers tried to reinterpret the story taken from the manga as having happened within Kurono's head, and aside from a couple issues, I thought it succeded. The final arc tied things together as neatly as could be expected. All the stuff which happened in the final arc (the suits and guns malfunctioning, the characters hallucinating, the final scene with the train even though it was a Bebop rip) made perfect sense with what the writers were trying to do. In a way, a couple of things that happened in the final arc were very reminiscent of things from the anime. Like Kurono alien=Tae alien? And Kurono being hesitant to kill the psychos reminded me of the Chibi alien mission where Kurono, affected by Kato's principles, was hesitant to kill those aliens. But yeah, sometimes I like to think that the final arc from the anime took place in Kurono's head while he lay chopped up and unconscious in the Buddha alien mission, cause the manga story does pwn!

I think of the extra mission and ending merely as fillers, giving Kurono's theme for rest of the entire story. It shows how Kurono comes to a realization that he must over come his fears and survive for the sake of his fallen comrades who sacrificed their lives for him. The "BANG!" scene at the end, before the train looks as if its about to hit Kurono, was classic. It shows how Kurono is no longer running from Death, and strong enough to face it head on, which is exactly what Kurono does in the manga, especially with his "final battle" or so to speak. I like to think of that scene because it also shows how Kurono has done some serious "leveling up" since his previous encounter with that train.

The importance that the anime gave to the old lady of the begining was something that I never understood

I just flat out hate the anime, ending and all. It was too slow paced, the last mission arc was horrid, and I didn't appreciate any of the changes the animators made to the original story.
The only thing I liked about the anime was the opening theme song.

Wow. What a perfect way to sum up the final arc of the anime. I like to think of the final arc in a manner similar to this because then it still fits into the overall theme of Gantz. All that stuff could've happened while Kurono was out during the Buddha mission.

damn, after reading all this im glad as hell that I deleted Gantz before it was finished downloading. It would have ruined my wishes to read the manga. God I hope the manga has a better ending.
