HL2 is awesome, but I need my MP fix, so I would say Halo 2. UT 2004 is fun, but I don't know, it just lacks certain elements like a good single player story or atmospheric environment.

HL2 has some of the best singleplayer action I've played, and CS:Source is a good update to a great game.

    HL2 = the king
I told him once or twice; to stop playin' cards, and shootin' dice.... he's in the jailhouse now

Voted Half-Life 2 because I had to buy it to get Counter-Strike: Source.

tbh, HL2 IS good, but a bit short for me.

If you go oldschool, well, I'd say doom2 made a lasting impression on me(my first LAN game was doom2) I remeber yelling @ my bro: LOOK, if you move, that guys moves on my screen, I CAN SEE YOU!!!

    LoL

duke3d was also fun, but in the end Q1 was much more fun in multiplayer, so that won.

If I accumulate all the shooters I have played, and putt hem against each other, I must say that hl1 was the best game, the singleplayer was awesome, something that was lacking back then often, lots of monsters, but a thin storyline. hl1 changed all that, and then came CS, the biggest onlinegame yet, based on the hl-engine.

hmm, also "Blood" was a damn nice game, very dark. And there have been lots of other good fps games, system shock, deus ex,...

But if you look@multi only, I'd say Q3 is still the best.
The most difficult FPS game still 2day is Q3, 2nd comes the new UT, and then a lot of other games, like SoF and such, and as LAST....CS. It's a complete noobgame, you just have to camp, and the spray makes it unable to advance in aim. (nonetheless I play CSS now, got2go with the flow, and the best prizes on LANS are for CSS )

    Eurgh, Doom 3.
    This game is repetitive:
Walk into a room, lights go off, you switch to your flashlight, you continue walking, monsters are spawned, you kill them to unlock a door and get lights back to be able to go to the next area.
    Next area:
Walk into a room, lights go off, you switch to your flashlight, you continue walking, monsters are spawned, you kill them to unlock a door and get lights back to be able to go to the next area.
    etc.

It is true that Doom 3 can seem repetative but it really does never get old to walk in circles around a slow moving zombie, shooting him in different places to see how the physics system will react.
Despite that my vote has to go to Half-Life 2 because it simply has the best storyline of any FPS and also the best multiplayer(Counter-Strike Source).

i like shooters but i have a few requirements for it to be anygood. i like the delta force series i miss sniping from 1500 yds. now all this stupid fog and dust storms its not fun to be a sniper anymore. i don't like cqb because i'll state this once and if you complain its your opinion. anyone can pick up a maching gun and just what we call spray and pray. but it takes skill to be a sniper. you have to make your bullets count. find me a good open terrain as in no foggy visuals and support to kick out cheaters and no tracers would be nice and that would have my vote.
never run from a sniper you will just die tired
