Heh.. oh that Jack Thompson. First he complains about how gamers slander him, then he compares himself to some great policeman (or was he a lawyer? My US history is a bit rusty). And then he says something like this.
32_Footsteps: To wrap up, any final message you’d like to get to video gamers?
Jack Thompson: Yes, put down the controller and get a life. Video gaming is an escapist activity and you’re being exploited by these companies. It’s not healthy; I worry about someone who would play Grand Theft Auto for ten hours a day. It’s a masturbatory activity, and it would be better if people put down the controller and went outside.
Not to even mention all the contradictions in his speech.
Also, it's a bit after the fact now, but since the topic came up, I'm going to say it:
Now, this modest videogame proposal. It was ridiculous, and satirical, but surely it had some purpose. So I set out to find that. After a bit of digging, I found out the story behind the title.
If you don't know, "A modest proposal" by Jonathan Swift was an official-looking document that proposed solving the poverty problem by allowing the poor to sell their babies to the rich, who would then eat them. Apparently the point was to criticize other proposed solutions to the problem, not the problem itself.
So, with this the whole thing actually makes sense. Jack Thompson is annoyed with the fact that nobody is doing anything to get rid of these violent games. His satire is directed towards people who claim to be fighting the problem, while they are in fact accomplishing nothing. Perfect.
Except.. doesn't that mean he's critisizing himself? What an ingenious man. I doubt there's much to fear from him.
The real problem, though, is that he does have a few good points. Video games can be used to train soldiers. Many countries do this. Also, if you've played a lot, you know how into the game you can get. Don't you feel the pang of satisfaction when you see a bullet striking your enemy's head and hear the death rattle? Don't you ever fantasize about being like the heroes of the games?
Still, with good upbringing, there should be no problem.
Good grief, what a huge lump of text.
Northernme has left the building. But he's still watching you.
