There wonīt be a shenmue 3 in the near future, just for the reason, it was too expensive in development (most expensive game so far), was to promote dreamcast capabilities and didnīt sold that good.
So from economically standpoints Sega doesnīt have many reasons for a sequel.
Yu Suzuki from Sega would like to continue the game though... (he already finished the story board for all chapters.)
There will be a new game called Ryu Ga Gotoku (made by Sega) on ps2 in japan this year, itīs kind of a mix of Shenmue and GTA.

Does nobody know Shenmue?
I've heard a lot about it, but I didn't understand the concept. What is it like, a 3rd person shooter or something?
A shooter???Quote:

Its really interesting, you can go into a arcade (and play old sega arcade games), buy a coca cola and drink it (there even winning cans), fight (Virtua Fighter fight system, but a alot easier) and there are QTE (acronym for quick time event) in which you have to press fastly press the correct buttons.
There were so many easter eggs in it, for example if you changed the intern clock of the Dreamcast to christmas you were able to meat santa on the streets or in Ryos and his deceased fatherīs house you could find an Sega Saturn or buy everything you want, including sega merchandise. ^^
Sega called the genre F.R.E.E (an acronym as well, donīt know exactly for what it stands).
Its the most expensive game so far (rumors say 80 million dollars) and it was released on Sega Dreamcast to promote it capabilities (theres a beta for Sega Saturn,so it was in development for a long time).
A port of shenmue II was released on Xbox with a video of cutcenes in Shenmue 1.
The story is still not finished, thats why a lot are desperatly waiting for a sequel of Shenmue 2, but like I mentioned before, the chance for it is very low...
Well I know the initial story too. But what kind of game genre is it?
well thats hard to discribe because of the mentioned facts, thats why Sega gave it his own genre.
Acion adventure meets fighting game ? well there are too many genres mixed in it.
Just read a review or play it yourself.
OMG! I loved Shenmue! The main reason why I bought an Xbox was so I could continue with the series. They better make Shenmue 3. :x
Definitely one of the coolest games I ever played. And the reason I modded my dreamcast for the sequel. Damn things just a paper-weight now...
The main body of the game was a 3rd person adventure game with Virtual Fighter like fight sequences. The character had to learn techniques to fight with and these were improvable through practice. Of course then there were the crazy instant response events, where something happened and you had to hit buttons in a certain order under a time limit to succeed...The world was interactive the way old ultima games were interactive. You could talk to anyone and they responded to you, but the responses were very limited unless they were part of the direct story. Like said, you could collect toys from vending machines, or music tapes, or win games to play on the system in your house...Games within games rock...
...too bad Sega stopped supporting their systems after the Genesis...If they had, they may not have taken such a PR hit and sold more Dreamcasts...and consequently more Shenmue...
Yeah. I love that game. You can do so many random things. There was two things I didn't like.
1.) Ryo... he's so... so... emotionless? He has girls throwing themselves at him and he's all like, "I understand how you feel. But I don't know how I feel." or like, "Go away, Joy. Leave me alone." He's just a jerk with little or no personality.
2.) The QTE. Ugh. I hate those. They make me so nervous. I don't like having to try to think so fast.
Who was your favorite character? (addressing this question to everyone) I love Joy and Fangmei. They are both so awsome. I'll never understand Fangmei's hair though. :?
BUT REN! OMG. He was sooooo fine. I want a guy like him. ^_^
