@Jyuu : Well, my point is that you wont be able to see the full eyecandy if your still using XP or have an older DX9 based card. Then again, the difference (based on some games) are only minor when running on DX10 mode and performance impact is noticeable.

@StealDragon: that X300 is the culprit...

Yeah. I can run Trackmania on decent settings imho but thats only with no anti-aliasing... I'll try to get a screenshot of it running at ~20fps.

The performance change varies on hardware and the software in question.

[H] Enthusiast - Crysis: DX9 vs. DX10

NVIDIA GPU based video cards have no real-world gameplay differences between DX9 and DX10, so there is no reason not to run in DX10. AMD ATI GPU based video cards do suffer a performance penalty for using DX10. If you are running an NVIDA GPU based video card, continue to run in DX10, but if you are running an AMD ATI GPU based video card you might want to consider running in DX9 for the best Crysis experience.

However, it's not the same case for LOTR online.

Meh, Trackmania isn't about its graphics anyway. Lower graphics doesn't ruin the enjoyment of such a game.
But I think Burnout is a bit about the eye-candy. It's part of what makes the game fun is watching your car getting wrecked?
