Having a higher poly count does not make a great game. Developers have to compromise, if they don't limit the poly count( a game model has usually 3 to 10 thousand) they might as well make a movie.

For ~$800 (without the monitor) you can get an awesome system which is just as good.

Doesn't the suit in Crysis have around 60000 polys? The kind of system you need to play Crysis properly is what would happen to mostly every game that had a poly count like that.

It's easier to make ridiculously high poly models (going into the millions) than it is to make an economical low poly model that looks just as good for 1/100 of the poly count.

Is this it? We're at a cockblock in terms of graphics?
My first thought would be its been two years since the consoles have come out, its not unfeasible to think that they've come close to topping out the power of the console itself. This generation is almost half over. Everyone's used to the consoles (except Mr Kojima apparently) and the only way I see the graphics improving is refinement of techniques.

I do wonder how long before games look as good as Pixar films do... even if you go all the way back to Monsters Inc. or something. Sully's hair is still enough to bend my mind.

He recently stated that he didn't like the outcome of MGS4 because he had to cut so much because he overestimated the capabilities of the PS3.

This thread is about making games look better, not making them more economical or more fun...

That reminds me of when I tried to play Unreal again last year.

...I was...surprised...at how easily I was blown away back then.

I know someone else who overrated the capabilities of the PS3.

I know that, how does that mean he isn't used to the console? I would think he was used to the PS3 more than anyone else, hence why he's pushed it to the limit on the first game he's made for it. He knows the limits on the PS3 that most devs won't even get near to.

    @ MadDogMike

I'd say a game would look better with more low poly models running around looking active and adding to the game's overall look, than a few high poly models seldom doing anything but looking nice.
