It's official. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has just announced a new 40GB PS3 which will launch in Europe for the price of €399. It will be available starting October 10th. As predicted, the new model features two USB 2.0 ports rather than four and no longer includes the multi memory card port. Strangely, the model also loses backwards compatibility support for PS2 games.
The existing 60GB Starter Pack will be reduced in price to €499. It will be on sale "while stocks last." We've contacted Sony Computer Entertainment America for a comment about its availability in the US.
Wow. How many models is sony making jesus
The price reduction is insignificant IMAO compared to how many valuable options they have removed....
well ppl have been asking for a price drop and i guess thats where to do it from. Remove the backwards compatibility.
Who cares about the backwards compatibility anyways? It takes like 1/2 a second extra to make sure the thing is oriented the right way anyways.
Backwards compatibility was being done through software, so it really doesn't make sense at all.
Sony dumping its shit on us again.
But that emulation was done by GS Chip + EE (That was emulated by the Cell)

If you want backwards compability, you need to buy the more expensive (That comes with the chip!)
But they don't run as good nor look as pretty even with smoothing option.
Guess screw with this backwards compability and get a 50bucks ps2 from ebay.. at least you save $50
not true, the 80gig ones have backwards compatibility via software emulation. Just in these they removed like EE chip like in the 80 gig versions too.
You need two chips for backward compability.
GS and EE
They removed the EE, and used the GS to make the software emulation, to make the CELL chip act as EE..
But on this 40gig, they also removed the GS, thus there is no one to emulate it anymore.
And I explained it on my post that also said that:
" you want backwards compability, you need to buy the more expensive (That comes with the chip!)" in other words, Buy the 80gig version that has the chip and works..
