Home might take over XMB
PS3 Home may completely replace the XMB
A website is claiming that Home may be being pruned to replace the XMB of the PS3. They claim that this would be a bad move from Sony as Home will not appeal to all gamers despite being interesting in its nature, it is believed that Home is simply nothing more than a novelty.
This last point is both encouraging and disappointing. It is good to see that Sony will continue to improve the quality of their product (which they are distributing for free after all). While the XMB has substantially improved since its first release – and continues to do so –, we would expect that this launch does not suffer from too many missing or incomplete features just so the product can be pushed out the door before Christmas.
As for Home replacing the XMB: Aside from whether this would even be feasible, we can’t stress enough how bad of an idea it is. Home, as it stands, is an interesting experiment, but it will not appeal to all consumers. We believe that many consumers will grow tired of its novelty after a few uses at least in the short term. It is very possible that it will gather momentum as it matures, and more critical features are added. Sony, in its effort to address the feature gap between its XMB offering and Xbox Live is pitching Home as the next-gen interface for consumers. Unfortunately, most consumers only want a simple, easy to use and direct interface to play games, communicate with friends and be entertained. We are therefore skeptical about its potential as a Replacement for a simple interface.

Man I don't like this idea. If this happens I might plant a bomb on ps3. I mean I think home is a cool add on, but I don't want it to take over my XMB. What about you guys? Your thoughts.
yeah...i dunno about taking over XMB, but as an add on it would be nice. =\
I think its quite a cool idea, comercially bad, but still quite cool. One way you couled envision HOME as is as the PS3 interface, rather than select an icon, bring up a menu or whatever, the PS3 interface could be the HOME enviroment. For example, if you wanted to watch a movie, you could walk/run over to the TV in your virtual appartment and interact with it to start the movie player, or you could interact with a virtual PS3 in you appartment to strat the game in the drive, or you could interact with a virtual photo album to view photos from your hard disc, a stereo for music and a computer to access the PS store. Basically you could integrate all of the PS3's functions into HOME, which would increase interactivity and would be quite a novel way of doing things.
Yeah, but the XMB is nice.
I'm so used to it.
I dunno. depending on how they implement it, and if this is true, this could be good. Imagine powering up your ps3, seeing your avatar and just accessing your game or file or whatever from there. No one's saying you have to actively use Home, its just a base like the XMB was. Personally the XMB is nothing special so I'm rather apathetic to its possibly imminent destruction.
like the icons and what you first see^
Thats an XMB
Anyway, but there was also rumors about the possibility of sony selling custom XMB icons. So would that not defeat the purpose of custom XMB icons.
I fail to see the point of doing that unless theyre game-centric icons that match the official wallpapers they have for download... but then they should be free.
Well M$ charges for themes on live gamer points, but gamer points aren't free...
Yeah, and quite often the themes suck, they should at least let you preview them. Having said that, the AC6 theme that I bought, rocks my socks off.
