How can Mario be faster than Sonic?

It just doesn't make sense!

One of thoses day on MythBusters there was this myth where you could propel a rocket using salami... maybe Mario do the same

it is stupid that a fat italian plumber can beat a blue hedgehog known for it's speed, espcially when sonic can obviously go faster.
