    Outlast him.

A dead hedgehog can't move very fast.

I feel that this picture helps this discussion.

and if it did not help than well Mario can't beat sonic in or on speed.

You can say I don't care BUT to say I don't care anymore is wrong I just don't care to care to give a rats ass about a damn thing.

I'm pretty sure the diving bit is a poke at Soccer/Football. The only thing is, aren't Italians better known for taking dives than blue hedgehogs? o_0

Football? There's a swimming pool and a diving board in the background...

I don't get it either...not like Sonic instantly dies when he hits water...

    Mario can breathe underwater.
    Sonic dies.

It takes a while for Sonic to die (few minutes then a countdown, get air bubble, continue repeat), and if he has a water bubble shield he can stay under as long as he doesn't get hit.

still, it's a diving contest, not a hold your breath the longest contest...

Yes, I think we all realise that. However, to "take a dive" means to pretend to be knocked out/hurt for the purpose of manipulating or rigging a sporting match/event, in its regular usage. It's most common in Football (and used to be and may still be used in rigging boxing matches).

The Italians did that to the Australian team in the most recent World Cup, costing us a couple of goals, which I guess is why it's the first thing that we usually think of when the phrase "take a dive" is used.
