Default Rumor: New 40GB PS3 model to be priced at $399

Rumor: New 40GB PS3 model to be priced at $399, with no backwards compatibility

The latest issue of Gameinformer is running a rumor that Sony are to release a new 40GB PS3 version without backwards compatibility at a super low price of $399. However, they did expect this to be announced at E3 so it is possible they got a bit confused and besides, backwards compatibility is now handled via software methods.

So Sony isn't out of the water yet with the other SKU's they already have and they plan to bring another one into the market... What do you guys think?

This is a bad idea not because they dont need half a dozen SKUs but because 20 gigs hdd space is not worth 100 dollars. Argh. Newegg has one for $30!!!

The cost of the Blu-ray drive is the main limiting factor Sony has to contend with in dropping the price on the PS3. The cost of the hard drive, whether it's including one with more or less storage capacity, is negligible compared to that.

Agreed. God dammnit I mean c'mon. Sony has to stick with one SKU and stick with it.

Again it is only a rumor

Pachter: 80GB PS3 Price to Drop to $499

Well-known Wedbush Morgan analyst has indicated that Sony will reduce the price of the 80GB PS3 to just $499 as soon as all the 'older' 60GB models have been sold out at the respective price. Patcher estimates that there are over 2 million 60GB PS3s which have been produced and not sold and are making their way to the States to cope with demand for the $499 price point.

    quote:

"In our view, the Sony entry level price of USD 499 is here to stay," he said in his latest report.

"We believe that there are presently 2 – 3 million 60GB PS3s produced and not yet sold, and expect the entire supply to be diverted to the US to honor the new lower price point.

"Once these units are sold through, we expect the company to lower the price of its 80GB model to USD 499 on a standalone basis."

you know what. Sony should just sell ps3 harddrives in 5 different sizes, emotion engine chips, cell processors, blu-ray drives, and empty ps3 cases and just let people buy the parts separately that they want and assemble the damn thing at home.

But then Sony would be indirectly responsible for the death of thousands of Americans...
