what i was trying to say is that, it's their way (sony, nintendo, microsoft) to make u go to the new console. If no games are coming out for it, then whats the point of having that system?? I work at EB games, i kinda know this stuff. Go to a store nearest you, and look at their "reserve" folder, and look at the PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube section. I think Xbox is done with games coming out for it, gamecube has like 3 games left, and PS2 have maybe like 20?
The original point was that a LOT of people are not willing to spend much money on video game systems for themselves or for their children, for varying reasons. Anybody who couldn't afford a PS2 previously now has the option of getting one for a very cheap price, with a MASSIVE library of awesome games that they've never played before, most of which are probably half-price now. I don't even work for EB, but just being a customer there I've seen a LOT of people who only buy things that are less than half price, and who (just over a year ago) were still interested in purchasing second-hand Nintendo 64 consoles/games. They're definitely not going to buy into the new generation until it's almost as dead as the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube generation.

omfg, i was writing a long as post about everything but i'll just sum it up. Most ppl have ps2/xbox/gc and are waiting to go to ps3/360/wii. ^ Only a few ppl are like what you mentioned. Those ppl aren't your casual gamer or so.

and i dont understand why ppl complain about the price of the ps3. Honestly, piece for piece it's cheaper than the 360. For the 360 to have all the functions of the ps3, it' more expensive. Right out of the box tho, ps3 is more expensive.

Now let's get the 360 to match up with the ps3 in number of functions.

    360 - $400
    HD dvd player - $200
    Wireless adapter - $100
Play and charge kit - $20
    Rechargeable batteries pack - $12

    total: $732

    PS3 = $600
    HDMI cables = $50 - 60

    total: $650 - 660

both now play high def movies, can charge and play at the same time, both have high def capabilities, and both now have wireless networks. Only thing i didnt mention is PS3 has a bigger hard drive. And supposively i heard the OS for 360 consumes like 9 gigs of the 20 gig hard drive? That suxxors imo.

but yeah, to sum it up, if you want more functions, ps3. if you want cheaper console to just play games, then 360.

The play & charge kit comes with a rechargeable battery pack.

Also, notice that the majority of people who complain about the PS3's price are the ones that don't give two shits about Blu-Ray, and just want a cheaper system that plays games. At least the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive is optional. If it gets cheaper a year or two later and the format is actually being widely used, I can always buy it then.

Last but not least, don't assume you know about everybody's gaming habits. You don't even live in the same country that I do, and you don't know what everybody thinks. Truth is, gaming is a much more expensive hobby in countries OUTSIDE of the U.S.A., and combining that with the fact that we generally don't earn as much money either (after currency conversion), you can't say that a lot of people still aren't interested in older games/systems.

I have to pay between A$100 and A$120 (Australian Dollars) for an Xbox 360 game, while PS2 games are between A$50 to A$100.

Also, on Xbox 360 launch day I bought:
    - Xbox 360 Premium pack
    - 1 extra wireless controller
    - 2 play & charge kits
    - Perfect Dark Zero
    - Fight Night Round 3
    - TES4: Oblivion

The total price was $1100, and I later bought a wireless adaptor for $150 bringing the total up to $1250. The PS3 on its own will cost us $1000 in Australia. Add in a controller and three games, and you can see the price will be $1400, possibly more.

Now, what about the HD-DVD playback, you ask? Australia has neither HD-DVD or Blu-Ray formats available commercially yet, so we're not interested in either at the moment. It has yet to be seen which format will become the next mainstream format aswell, so I'd rather not buy an expensive Blu-Ray capable PS3 and find out that the format loses the battle in the near future.

That ugly poorly designed game? The same game in which there are glowing arrows on the floor to guide you because they even know it's badly made? Really? Did I just read that you bought PDZ? It's probably worth $10 for the achievement points.

sorry, didnt mean to offend u in any way, but i yeah i was assuming here in the U.S. or so.

as for the gaming consoles, yeah, i gotta agree with you there. The ps3 is has more functions, and ppl dont appreciate that. they just want a cheaper at hand gaming console. The HD dvd player drive probably wont go down in price too much if any since it's going to be just for the 360, but a HD dvd player itself should go down in price in a few years.

also, expensive blu-ray player? ps3 is a cheap blu-ray player actually. If blu-ray wins, then yay, i dont have to buy a hd-dvd player...if blu-ray loses, i have to get a hd dvd player.

so if blu-ray wins i save a lot of money, since i dont have to buy a blu-ray player.

if blu-ray loses i have to spend $500 for the toshiba HD dvd player. (since no 360)

if HD-dvd wins, then the cheapest way to get HD-dvd player is the hd-dvd player for the 360, which costs $200 american dollars (u can do the conversion). But since u own the 360, and blu-ray wins, you have to get a ps3 $500 - 600 or a blu-ray player that costs $800+ as of right now. (all american dollars)

just to boot, i believe blu-ray does have a little more titles out (movie wise).

First of all, I don't care if you're the admin, I'm getting tired of this game. :/

Second of all, I knew it was a shit game before I bought it, but it came bundled with the extra controller plus a few other things (a faceplate, sampler disks, and some other stuff I can't remember). The choice of games was extremely limited at the Australian launch, so I thought "What the fuck, might as well" and bought it just because it might have offered a little bit of multiplayer fun with my friends.

If both consoles had an optional HD movie player attachment, then everybody would win. However, everybody who buys the PS3 is forced to buy into a format that has a chance of dying.

I didn't say the PS3 is an expensive Blu-Ray player, I said the PS3 is expensive because it includes a Blu-Ray player.

The reason the PS3 is so expensive is for two reasons:
    - Cell Processor
    - Blu-Ray drive

Take either one of those out and costs should drop.

so if blu-ray wins i save a lot of money, since i dont have to buy a blu-ray player.

if blu-ray loses i have to spend $500 for the toshiba HD dvd player. (since no 360)

Assuming I bought an Xbox 360 and you bought a PS3:

    If HD-DVD wins:
    - I buy the HD-DVD addon, combined costs would be roughly $600 ($400 + $200 U.S. dollars, going on costs mentioned earlier in the thread)
    - You need to buy a HD-DVD player on top of your PS3, costing roughly $1100 total, and have a useless Blu-Ray drive.

    If Blu-Ray wins:
    - You already have all you needed (a PS3), totalling $600.
    - I buy a PS3 (since according to you its cheaper that way), bringing my total cost up to $1000, and I get to play all the PS3 exclusive games.

So, we can see that overall, I win.

The truth is though, that I've already got an Xbox 360, and I'm very likely going to get a PS3 when FFXIII and MGS4 come out, so I want to have the option to CHOOSE which of those two formats I want to support. That's why I'm annoyed that I'm forced by Sony to fork out more money than I need to.

Blue Ray gets porn. So I guess that makes BR superior to HD DVD in some point...

    What?
No, Blu-ray is NOT GETTING PORN. That is why it is going to fail.

    @ maddogmike

but u didnt add all the other things like the wireless adapter, recharge kit, etc. And just to boot, the smaller hard drive, so u might have to get another one of those before the ps3 needs one.
