    Default Storyline

I have not played many games but as far as I know almost all RPG game are based on the "hero, gather allies, and fight the boss and save the world" or somewhere around those lines. Anyone know a good storyline thats perhaps more interesting than that? Of course it it can come with good gameplay it be good.

Tales of the Abyss(stereotypical, but more complex than most games)
Baten Kaitos 1(this is the greatest plot twist ever. Seriously, it's a masterpiece, REALLY amazing)
    Chrono Chross
Shin Megami Tensei(simple stories in 2 of the 3 games for PS2, but still great stories)

I'll post a few more later.

Contact had a unique ending, and an oddball storyline...but the gameplay kinda sucked. My gripe is that the game is too hard and forces you to grind, or simply buy/make a hundred potions. Other than that fault, it has some neat things to it, like how you're free to do whatever you feel like, and how you have multiple classes and whatnot. And the story IS unique...but it's not really interesting as it goes. I don't find myself eager to know what will come next, but I was curious about the ending. But a good story is not just good at the end.

^Me after watching Spirited Away, because I discovered the best movie ever!
Random but good advice: Play Metal Slug.

RPG’s in essence require “hero, gather allies, and fight the boss and save the world” storylines to pan out. Even the eccentric RPG’s like Earthbound fit that description. Harvest Moon type games just don’t generate good storylines by nature. What separate the decent from the great are the twists, complexity, and innovativeness of the storyline.

    That being said:

My personal top four for best RPG storylines:

    1) Final Fantasy Tactics
    2) Xenogears
    3) Tales of the Abyss
    4) Tactics Ogre

I would make it a top five, but there is a huge difference between the four mentioned and others from the genre in terms of storyline.

Thanks for the titles guys! I am now trying tales of the abyss and it has a rather intersting storyline. A little bit long but I am fine with that.

wait, isn't tales of the abyss the same thing he wanted to diverge from? i mean it still is hero, gather allies and save the world. and how do you get pokemon which has no storyline whatsoever?

Metal Gear Solid, unless you mean RPGs only, which you did not specifically state. As for actual RPGs; Baldur's Gate 2 is my all time fav game, pretty good story, awesome gameplay. Chrono Trigger is a classic, it has a stereotypical storyline however it flowed sooo well that I didn't mind it at all, plus all the characters are really likable.

Yes I did want to diverge from that but seeing as how it is difficult to find an rpg that is not that way i went for the next best thing that is a more interesting and complex storyline. As to getting pokemon if that is what you meant, I don't really like to train as much as others and in pokemon from past experience there is a lot of training to be done.
