Suikoden 4 disappointed me... I was a huge fan of three, and I had great hopes for the new one. Don't get me wrong, I playe the whole game through, but fighting seaweed wasn't my idea of fun.

you get that right...i was completely shocked when the enemy's like seaweed and other seaweed in other place...maybe the reason i play suikoden 4 is only because there's Ted...and to complete Suikoden series

ok, im sure ive posted this on like 7 different sites now, but this suikoden were talking about, so ill put my opinions.

Suikoden 1: Woah! this games really really good!

Suikoden 2:..I have...witnessed...perfection!(still my fav game of all time)

Suikoden 3: what the hell is this crap!? I spent 10+ hours for 2 crappy main characters, one slightly good one, a drab ass world, EASY AS HELL TO GET CHARACTERS, sloppy battle system, and rushed story?...eww....

Suikoden 4: Wow, this one isnt nearly as bad as 3, but not nearly as good as 1 or 2.

Its a step in the right direction with 4, imo. My gripes about it are: Fairly short(thats my biggest gripe about it), the ship traveling is waaayyy too annoying, most of the spells look really stupid, and they seemed to have gotten rid of the cool animeish moves from 1 and 2, to replace them with "realistic" attacks that all kinda look the same.

greatest game ever? hardly. A step forward for the Suikoden series? Indeed. It was a good game, maybe a little worse than 1, but I still found it enjoyable.

you are definitely right about the game being real short and the magics are suck but still i can't believe they remove the 6 people battle system...
about the sea travelling...even if you push R button to fasten it...yeah...it still annoying...
even more...they also remove the system for runes and armor and blacksmith for all people there even they're not in the party member when buying in the shop...though actually i just lazy too up and down many times... and maybe because it's 300 years before suikoden 1 so it's still kinda primitive u think?

Hmm, i've bought S4 a long time now, but really havent played it far yet. The fact that they changed it into horrible 3D really turns me off.

I didnt play the first Suikoden, and i started and S2 which was really great and had an amazing story line. And then there came suikoden 3 which had a breakthrough of showing the same story from 3 different point of views. Or 4 if you're counting the extra villain one.

And then i was soo sooo sooo sooooo very happy like a puppy when i got suikoden 4 at the same time i got FFX-2, MGS-SE, GTA-SA and along with a lot of other games. (I buy em in bulk, lol) However what a dissapointment S4 was. I played it for an hour or so, and got so bored with it, that i havent touched it ever since.

Please someone tell me why it's worth playing so that i'll try to motivate myself into playing it so that at least i know more about the story of the suikoden world.

it's really short story if you ask me...just played it you will find the story will almost end already...suikoden 3 is way much better...of course...2 is still the best of all...u should try playing 1!

The only good thing of Suikoden IV is the graphic and character design. I love the character design. It is not as good as the third one, but it reminds me of Suikoden 2 character design.
The story is awfull of course, but better than suikoden 3. number 3 is the worst suikoden's game i think (the story I mean)
An the best of all the four games of course suikoden 2. I've played it 5 times already.
Now we just have to wait for Suikoden 5. I got the info that you can battle with 6 people. Return to the old times now. And you can change the formation into triangle or other.
The game will take place in Queendom Falena, the country where the leader is a Queen. The main character is the Queen's son. Don't know the timeline though.
The graphic almost like FFX and FFX-2. It is really good. But I don't know the release date yet. Hope it will be soon.
It will be release for PS2, though.

    Update

I've just recently finished playing suikoden 4. I finished it in 3 or 4 days max. Damn, it's such a short short short shorttttttttt game. I could get most (90%) of the characters on my own.. it's way too easy. In the end, even though i felt happy for finishing a game, i was very very dissapointed at the overall quality of this suikoden game.

What makes us love suikoden? Well here are some of the reasons:

    1) The story.
This is the main charm of the suikoden series. Of all RPGS i've played, suikoden has the strongest storyline. In my opinion, the storyline is even better than final fantasy series.. which is good only in its graphics and sounds.

Suikoden 2 had the best storyline. In my mind, it's still rated as one of the best storytelling that i've ever experienced. (Whether it's from books, tv or movie, anime or games) There were series plot twists, loveable and hateable characters. You really didnt expect what would happen at the next turn. Some things can make you laugh, some things can make you cry (i actually cried a couple of times in this game). It was a simply amazing experience and will always be close to my heart.

In the beginning as i played suikoden 3, i was happy and impressed to see that they havent gone 3D and stuck with the conventional anime style FMV. As i progressed further, the first couple of hours of gameplay, i a little dissapointed after comparing it from suikoden 2... but was really pleasantly surprised when i found out about the different chapters of the different characters thing.

It was a total new breakthrough in PRG type of storytelling. As an RPG lover, i love the genre not because of the troublesome monster fighting or stuff like that... but more of the amazing story that was going to be told. Therefore, it really took me by surprise when they introduced the multiple-character-perspective into the storyline and the gameplay. It truly brought storytelling into a whole new light and truly a revolution!

The best part about it is that... the MANY MANY characters in suikoden would be better utilized this way. Instead of ending up using only a couple of characters and ignoring a lot others, leaving them only in reserve, this way suikoden 3 really allows us to use a lot more characters than it would otherwise.

OVerall, even though it couldnt beat suikoden 2 in its storyline, it truly won in the way how the story was told. In that respect, it was truly the best game that i've ever played and i absolutely love it. (And felt deeply attached to some of the characters inside, because we could see the same situations from the perspective of different people)

But suikoden 4's story really has made my stomach churn. Especially with the super predictable plots.... i could see from the beginning that the good-for-nothing friend of the hero is going to betray him. There were no twists, there were no magic moments, there were no touching moments, there were no glorious moments and finally, it's all over before you can even get absorbed INTO the world itself. (I completed everything 100% on the first try but still felt that it was not adequate and lacking in a lot of things)

    2) The stronghold.
In every suikoden game, there is the stronghold. Well i havent exactly played the first one before, but i presume that there is one in all suikoden games. This is one feature that is predominant and fun in this RPG series. The fact that you have a HQ base and you can gather people/talents into your stronghold and watch it as it grows and evolves from crap into something that you're proud of. This is clearly lacking in suikoden 4.

In suikoden 2 we get the old castle which was Victor's old village.. and there, we started the counter attack and even won a great tactical battle there. From a broken down shabby looking castle at first, whcih only had 2 levels, we saw it grow and get upgraded with the stars of destiny that we collected. And it grew into 5 or 6 levels and became a hugely populated city with lots of interactions inside. You wont get bored walking around looking at new things and talking to the people around.

It wasnt as good in suikoden 3, but at least we're given that huge beautiful mansion and we're at least able to see some physical growth in our HQ. But in suikoden 4, we're already given a huge HUGE huge (and did i mention huge) ship, which is already top-of-the-line to begin with. Nothing much to improve there, cept to bring in people to move in and fill in the empty rooms... thats it. No growth, nothing whatsoever.

    3) Characters (108 stars of destiny)
Well, i'm glad that they have brought out some of the more familiar faces with characters such a VIKI and Jeanne (the runemaster), but it just didnt make sense. Suikoden 4 was supposed to be 50 years BEFORE the first suikoden installment and yet... in a bath scene, VIKI mentioned to JEanne that they seemed to have bathed together before... when they're actually meeting again in the future.. in the previous suikoden installments.

But other than that, the rest of the characters were really crap. The hero's best friend is a crap character. In suikoden 2, even though the best friend character, Joey, was a traitor, we could still emphatize with him.... but in suikoden 4, he was just worthless that i felt like executing him when i could. But didnt.. because i needed to collect all 108 stars. The rest of the characters too were mediocre at best.

The only saving grace in suikoden 4 is the character Lino en Kuldes. I dont know how he was in the japanese version, but in the english version, i really loved the character because of the voice actor. He sounded really cool and appropriate for the character. And it also somehow reminded me of the voice of the character Jack Bower from the tv show 24. But thats about it.

    4) The True Rune
In suikoden 2, we had a true rune split into two and the users destined to fight against each other - which was the base for the amazing storyline. In suikoden 3, we were treated with 4 or 5 true runes and the users. With 1 true rune (wind) holder being the villain wishing to destroy the world. A character which i loved and used a lot in suikoden 2, became the villain in suikoden 3. And yet he was still impossible to hate.. and easy to empthize with because of the character-perspective-chapter thingy.

However in suikoden 4... the rune itself suck... and it literally sucks the life out of the user and killing him. And it didnt do much too. Then came along the 2nd true rune user, Ted. But then be also didnt have a main role and was a 2nd grade supporting character at best, who didnt have any role in the main story. It was such a dissapointing situation.

    5) The world
We all know that we become familiar and love the world of the RPG that we're playing. But in Suikoden 4 it's all water with a few islands which we had to visit repetitively. Plus, the very boring sea travel which had to be done manually really gave the game an A+ rating in the boring department. The worst part of all is that, even though it's the open sea, we couldnt explore as we wished... and there's some invisible wall in the sea which forces us away from some areas without any explanation whatsoever. It was totally flawed.

I really really really hope the developers for suikoden 5 learn from their past projects and get their act together for this latest version for the suikoden series. I'm a true big fan of it, but if the 5th series is sucky too they're going to get out of business real soon. (Especially with final fantasy coming out with some sort of breakthrough with every ff game released)

What do I have to say! Man! That's a really long post you got. But I like the way you tell all of the reasons we have to play Suikoden. And I definitely agree with all of your reasoning.

Some correction about the timeline of suikoden IV you mentioned. It ws not 50 years before the event in Suikoden but it was actually 150 years before the event in Suikoden.

The same with you, I played Suikoden IV only because there's Ted in it. And I'm really dissapointed because he didn't have a major role in the game.

My greatest wish is that the next game will be much much better than the two previous games. Maybe will be on par with Suikoden II? I'm not expecting that though. No other games can compare with Sukoden II.
I need something to cure my illness. My back aches, my stomach aches, my eyes aches, my hands aches, my head aches, my foot aches, my whole body aches. And the medicine? Will someone give me something?
