    Cleaning:
There is no definitive way to do this, basically you just need to make the page clean and tidy, the problem is that, depending on the raws, it may need a lot of complicated work.

Luckily the Jap FE raws are already pretty clean, so its kinda easy.
First thing to do if you are working with regular black and white pages is to convert it to greyscale (in photoshop: image -> mode -> greyscale), this removes all colour information and leaves you with an 8bit grey image.

Original on the left, greyscaled on the right.

Next we might have to rotate the image so that it is straight.
    http://www.n-u-l-l.net/wiki/index.ph...tton_align.png

Once its straight, we can clean up any dirt, level it so that black is black, white is white and the midtones are just right (I sound like a poet lol), we can now remove all the text, reconstruct any broken areas and then resize it (most people say resize it last, but I like to resize the image before text is added, that way the text retains quality).

    Cleaned image.

    Typesetting and quality control:
This is where is where oxybe translates the text and puts it onto the page in a PSD file instead of just sending a text file and making the editor do it (its much much faster this way, and prevents problems since he knows where the text is supposed to go).

The way he puts the text on the page is by using the type tool.

Hold the left mouse button on the "T" icon to get the extra options seen here.

This allows him to create a text box in which to place the text which he can also format (most text is centre aligned "anime ace 2.0 BB").

Once all the placement has been done, oxybe sends the PSDs back to me, I then check to make sure all the text is alligned and formatted in the bubbles correctly. I then do any extra edits like move the little hearts and stars in some bubbles into the correct places (select the area, copy and paste into a new layer and erase the original). Also, if there are any pieces of text that have to be placed over drawn areas, I have to give the text a white border (rasterize the text, select the area outside the text and invet to select the text, expand the selection, create a new layer, fill the secection white and then put that layer behind the text layer).

Once I've finished with the second edit, I send the PSDs to senile_senin, he then checks all the edits and the dialogue for mistakes and if necessary, adjusts the dialogue for accuracy and to make it flow better.
By this time I will have also sent him the PSD for the credits for him to check for errors.

Once he has finished quality control, he convert all the PSDs to jpeg, zips them all up and sends oxybe and I a copy for us to check over. If no one spots any major problems, he then releases the chapter (puts it on mangaupdates).

And thats how we do it. For a more indepth guide to scanlating, go here.

One last thing, @s_s: when you release the chapter, remember we are "StopTazmo Ecchi Fans", there is no space between "Stop" and "Tazmo", the capitalization is important too.

    Oops, so noted.

Re cleanup, I'd have to say that you can't recover detail that just isn't there. That's one reason we switched to the JP scans from the FR scans we were using. The JP scans had some midtone problems, but also had a good bit more detail.

If you're really serious about image quality, you pretty much have to scan your own pages. Scanning can be a fiddly process, but the work required to fix a bad scan is usually much greater than getting it right in the first place.
Not really the love+hate god, but the pic (from Midori no Hibi) is just too funny... Blog? Yeah.
