Hey guys, I'm not trying to be a spammer but I just want to thank you guys for scanlating these chapters. The last time chapters were scanlated were pretty much last summer, so I'm glad that I can enjoy more chapters now.

a little update on the translation of chapter 52.

I will be uploading for proofreading tonight or tomorrow. as said before, i was planning on having it done for friday, but family issues came up wednesday night so i rushed home and away from PC (the whole desktop setup is kinda too large to fit in a kitbag/schoolbag and on a shuttle bus... :P ), and thus left the near finished chapter 52 translation undone on my desktop as a reminder of what i have to do when i get home. i just came home not too long ago and i'm currently working on finishing up what's left.

so yeah, i will either post the zipped all-psd translated version tonight or pull an all-nighter and post it tomorrow morning.

also, thanks for all the support guys! it really means a lot to us.

Its OK, take your time, I have tonnes of work to do at the moment so I may be delayed in editing it anyway. For the same reason, I won't be able to spend as much time editing the pages this week, so you might notice a slight drop in quality this week, although I still intend to do a fairly good job on them.

    Default Similar idea, different series

I'm Nojay, the guy who's scanlating Family Compo from the French Tonkam edition, similar to the way you're doing Futari Ecchi from the French translation.

Recently I got hold of decent-quality scans of the original Shueisha Japanese tankos of Family Compo and I've been using them as the source for pages to edit. This means I can keep my precious French books in one piece rather than break them up for scanning on a flatbed. These Japanese scans are also higher quality than the French printing which looks as if it was photocopied from the original Japanese books, not the artist's original drawings. You can see what I mean on my webpage, www.nojay.org.

I've also got raws of the Japanese edition of Futari Ecchi (up to volume 9). A side-by-side comparison shows me that the French edition scans you're releasing are a bit fuzzier in the detail and line, same as what I found in Family Compo. If you want, email or PM me and I'll send you what I've got if you want to switch to using them for your scanlation. The downside is that the sound effects (SFX) are in Japanese. I tend to lift these off and fix the image if I can, but sometimes I just add an explanatory note underneath if it looks too much trouble.

    Comments on your release:

Your file sizes are too large for the page pixel counts. The Japanese raw scans (approx 750 x 1100 pixels per page, not much bigger than your releases) are 160-190kb per page, and they're in 24-bit RGB. My own pages are a lot bigger (1100 x 1600 pixels) than yours and my file sizes are 300-400kb each.

You seem to be scanning your pages at 72dpi which causes smeary moire effects on the screentones (the dot patterns) used by manga artists for textures and other effects. Normal Japanese screentones are 150dpi, I have found. You'd be better off scanning at a multiple of 150dpi and then reducing the page size to keep the screentones sharp.

Page numbering -- if you've got more than ten pages, you should number the pages 01, 02 etc. That lists them in the correct order for slideshow programs like Irfanview. My own releases of Family Compo are numbered to match the volume pages up to 190 so I use three digits -- 001, 002 etc.

Watch out for bad translations -- I've spotted a few of those with Family Compo where the translator screwed up or misread the Japanese text. Having the Japanese scans to hand is useful here, even if you have to resort to Babelfish and/or assorted on-line Japanese dictionaries to figure out what's really going on.

Thanks for continuing this series anyway. Now you shall know pain. Cheers.

As I've said before, we're only doing MQ releases, I've got both French and Japanese raws, so we don't need anymore, but thanks for your offer. If they are as high quality as you say they are though, hold on to them, I'm short on time at the moment, so I wouldn't be able to look over them, but in the future we may need to call apon you for them. If you have the time either PM me or post a typical page and I'll take a quick look.

I guess I should probably convert the images to grey scale when I edit them, so yeah my bad.

We're not actually scanning them, we're just using low quality raws that Oxybe found. Personally I never scan anything below 300dpi (600dpi for colour). If it were up to me, I would insist that the pages were scanned at 300dpi, but unfortunately it can't be helped.

We've never considered manga viewers (I just use windows image and fax viewer), but we'll bare that in mind for our next release.

    ----------

I feel the need to apologise, there may not be a release this week, I've got a lot of work to do ('cos I'm lazy and didn't do it earlier), so assuming that oxybe provides a translation before I go on holiday, I may not be able to do the edit (although oxybe may decide to do it himself, he hasn't told me yet).

Also, as I've already said, I'm going to be away on holiday until about the end of the month, so unless oxybe does the editing himself or gets someone else in to do it in my place, there won't be a new release for a couple of weeks.

Oh, and be good while I'm gone.

Oxybe - you want my help with the edits? Just PM me with a path for your translation and the raws.
Not really the love+hate god, but the pic (from Midori no Hibi) is just too funny... Blog? Yeah.

as of writing, i'm not at my cozy little apartment, i'm back home with the family. i must have fallen asleep at the computer, cause a nice "ring ring" woke me up and i bumped my head on my monitor, lol.

the family wanted me home, again. except this time i brought 2 things with me:
    -photoshop
-what i've already worked on & the raws

i did most of this while my brother was away on the new family PC they got for christmas. thank god, otherwise i don't think the old W2K machine would have lasted long with photoshop on it lol.

but yeah, i have good news: it's (finally) done

a lot of the pages have darkened left sides. i've only removed the text itself from the speech bubbles. if senile_seinen or anyone else would like to work on restoring the images themselves to better quality, be my guest.

me, i'm going to sleep. i think my annual winter flu is starting to hit. i'm going home later tonight, so i'll be sleeping in a real bed soon. a good night's sleep is just what the doctor ordered. then it's off to chapter 53, "the manual of the 48 positions" (or at least, a chapter on it... the manual itself is an 8-page bonus chapter between ch 54 and 55).
