after reading chapter 67 again, i remembered that Dr Marcoh said that Amestrian alchemy utilises the enery from tectonic movement and other geological phenomena.
chapter 67, page 33:
Mei-Chan:it seems the alchemy of Amestris does not use Lung Mei.
Marcoh:Yes, we use the energy of the movement of the Earth's crust.
therefore, unless Father is channeling his power through the Earth in order to power the alchemic reactions of Amestris and using this to confuse alchemists (to what end I don't know),

Although, Mei-Chan later brings doubt to this 'use of the tectonic energies' theory, by saying:
"Rather than the fluctuations of the Earth's crust, this power that flows under our feet, it feels like a great number of people are squirming around"
Also, Father stopped all alchemy during his battle with Ed and Al (but to what extent we don't know).So there is a possibility that Father does control the fluctuation of energy in Amestris, however, it still seems unlikely, to say the least, that he is the one controlling all the reactions within Amestris.
One more thing just came to mind: when Father effectively stopped Ed and Al from using alchemy during their fight, perhaps he was just dispersing the energy like Ed did during his second fight with Scar.
So, in the end I guess we just don't know...but theories are pretty fun to waste time on though.

Marcoh is wrong, that is what Amestrian Alchemist are told is the source of their power. But as Mei Chan says, it really feels like people squirming under the earth; being souls trapped in Father.

Remember, he destroyed an entire empire of millions of people (xerxes), he has a hell of a lot of soul power in him.

Well, in xerxes alchemy did already exist, and father wasn't there to power them with souls, which also is a flaw of him being the power source.
As if he is the powersorce for Renkinjutsu, what was the Xerxes alchemy's powersource?
Also, if he wants a new/more power to his philosophers stone. Would it make much sense in letting people use it as they like?
With the ritual he's preparing he wants more life, and I'll tell you this. If I was looking for more power so I could live longer, I sure as heck wouldn't give out power at the whim of others. When it suited me, yes. But not just for randoms who wanted to make life easier for themselfs, not moving my plans anything.

we're not discussing the power source of xerxes alchemy...

we're discussing the power source of amestrian alchemy.

for all we know, xerxes wasn't a very big nation and amestris is much bigger, for father it's probably worth it to sacrifice some of the souls he has in him to get even more.

We've seen that it doesn't take that much energy to do most forms of alchemy and it would make sense for father to make himself the power source of people who could potentially oppose him. That way as we've seen with ed and al, when they do try to oppose him, he can simply cut off the power and they won't be able to do much to him.

Exactly, Xerxes alchemy which goes onto Xingese alchemy is true alchemy, powered from the natural alchemic powers or whatever, and the Amestrian alchemy is Father's.
