well, i thought that they were trying to repeat the xerxes incident to make more homuculi and to replace humans as the greater species.

that's possible.. though i don't think its likely. first, it took them many, many years just to set up Amestris for this experiment. second, instead of seeing humans as competition, the homunculus don't really give a damn about them (well, except Greed, but he's an exception). i'm pretty sure they have a different agenda.
Quite a good chapter. Such irony since while Ed and Al have been searching for the philosopher's stone all this while, there's always been well, a human sized one near them.
So guess, my stand current is: Slave = Hoenheim, Fuzzy thing = Father
Anyway, forgot who was the one that mentioned it, about the plunging of personalities that led to Father being so bland. And that souls used need to be replaced (hence a need for the repeat of the rite).
Then, about the wife's promise, i think it's not a "cure her sickness" thing but rather a "wait for him" thing. If i'm not mistaken, instead of setting out to find a cure for her wife's illness (which only emerged after he left) he was looking for a cure to his immortality.
And since we now know that he's a philosopher's stone, that explains why he's an It to Mei and not a person. But because he was originally human, he can reproduce.
^ No, fathered called him an "it", which doesn't make a lot of sense at all, since he knew that he was human.
^ He passed through the door, so presumably, he saw the truth, makes me wonder what the homunculus got out of it though.
^ Hohenheim, they both went through the door, the homunculus would refer to father, though now that I think of it, we do know what he got out of it, an immortal body with a power supply that allowed for the manipulation of matter...
