Doesn't work like that, they have different story lines, I never saw the anime so I can't tell you when it diverged, but even then, I'm pretty sure that there were differences throughout.

Like adonai said, it's basically two different stories but with the same characters and central concept of alchemy. However, the storyline diverges right from the start as does the deeper meanings of alchemy. The anime is simpler but the ending is shambolic whilst the manga is still going strong and is much more complex.

The anime and manga are two different stories. They each have many different aspects and theories of alchemy. I myself like to watch the anime then compare it to the manga. The manga is always better since its original. The biginnings are sort of the same, except thte manga is much faster than the anime.

I've seen tons of threads like this and I watched the anime first, then read the manga (from the start since everyone says it's completely different). The death of Hughes was not nearly as sad in the manga then in the anime since he didn't have as much character development since Ed didn't birth his wife's child. I noticed there were small to moderate differences in the first few chapters but the major diverging point is around chapter 32 with the introduction to the countrey Xing/Shin.

    **spoilerish**

Some noteable things that differ from the anime and the manga in the first few chapters is that Tucker the "Life-sewing" alchemist actually dies and Marcoh lives. Also it isn't Roy Mustang who kills Winrey's parrents (I won't spoil who does)

[edit]: Also Sloth is completely different from the anime version, anime Pride is manga Wrath and failed human transmutations are actually just duds, not homonculus-to-be.

It's actually not that clear in my opinion, they obvious aren't powered by a stone, so they aren't effectively immortal, but aside from that, both of the revenants were killed, they didn't die by themselves after being created. That doesn't mean that they're homunculus of course, but they weren't exactly failures, they just failed in the sense that they weren't the people their creators tried to resurrect.

That and they were shambling piles of body parts, so I think they'd constitute as failures in every sense of the word.
