hohenheim said he is the philosopher's stone - i'm guessing instead of a small philosopher's stone powering a homunculus, his body is completely made of that material - thus immortal.

Now there seems to be a third look alike character, the golden man.

Since he taught Xing alchemy, it stands to reason that he can't be father (who knows nothing about Xing alchemy), or Hohenheim, who went there to learn Xing alchemy.

mm, we don't know that he's a look-alike though, do we? we just know that he had golden hair and blue eyes, which isn't uncommon in Amestris

^ I'd like to think that there's a limit to how many immortals over ~500 years old there are in the manga, and having one one of them be completely unrelated to all the others wouldn't make much sense to me.

    ^
i read the chapter again and the only reference to the sage is:

"... the man who taught xing about alchemy had golden hair and golden eyes, that's why people thought he was immortal"

i don't see how this translates into him actually being immortal

^ If I recall correctly, it's also a reference to what they talked about in the desert near the ruins of Xerxes, alchemy (in both countries) is supposed to have originated there, I'll have to check back on that and see if that was actually what they said.

Besides, I doubt that the "just like Ed and Al" line was just put there for no reason. Aside from that, the hair might be relatively common, but I doubt that the eyes are.
