No, that was the point, Ark. I COULDN'T contribute because I was only allowed to post whenever the last vote was for someone I agreed with. As someone who doesn't like to vote, it made it really difficult to contribute at all.

Honestly, it still feels like too much to me. Secret mayor votings? What was that about? In recent games, we've had all these (complicated) roles, but the hype has really worn off. No one really feels excited to use them anymore. I think a big problem is that new people run the game every time; the new people have different ideas for rules, roles, how they want the game to be played, and they really want a chance to run a game like that. Originally, all the games were run by the same person (IIRC) and they were all the same. We weren't jumping around into different set-ups each time where we've grown so accustomed to many roles and rules that no one even uses them anymore.

Like... remember the bulletin board's introduction? How people totally used it to pass on messages and manipulate people? And how there was a room on IRC where TONS of discussion/alliances occurred? We've grown so used to their existence, and playing with the usual strategies (ie: using seer to contact everyone, or the mafia rely on using assassins/prostitute/extra roles), that the things that once allowed real strategies to be used have died out. Unfortunately, the townie one seems to work, so there's no incentive not to use it, and any roles to balance it out (hidden mafia) would favour the other side too much - because of that strategy.

    Um, yeah, right.

Back to the IRC thing. In the past, we played with each other (in CC) - with people we already knew really well. Now, regulars of Mafia play Mafia. I don't know most of you from anywhere except here. We don't have enough old people coming in and playing... not 'old' as in 'always plays Mafia', but as in 'we know them already from outside the Mafia game'. That's what made it fun, I think. We'd really have to turn against people we had befriended and trusted. I don't find it difficult to suspect any of you since I don't know and trust you - and to me, it really makes the game boring. I only interact with people when it comes to the occasional necessary PM, which is rare. It's great to have discussions on IRC, but so few people actually go there, and those who do are not always serious about it. Without that, it just isn't as fun to play Mafia with people who you've always played it with - it's more fun with your old friends, or with new people entirely, I think (new people who know how to play the game, though, and will be active about it).

Well Digi, the original rules can be used, but who wants to play and who doesn't cannot be helped. I certainly enjoyed the old games the most, but that doesn't mean I haven't enjoyed the new ones. Additionally, it is also nice to be able to interact with new people.

By the way, the IRC channel still exists, although it is just me and Ark there. :/

Well, personally, I would have found your role rather fun to play as since I could blame my decision on someone else, or just try asking someone to vote for whoever so I could copy him. But asides from being a town fool:

Well, you've got to understand that in the modern world, "new" is generally good, so that you don't have to repeat the same thing over and over like when you get utterly sick of a food or song, just that for this game there wasn't much balance since there were a bit too few old things (regular townies XD). And then after a while you go back to try old things for old times' sakes, like what dante will do in his next game. As for anything else you mentioned, uh, sure, I agree.

'New' can be good, but in the examples I've seen, a 'new' person means that they have their own ideas about how a game is played that they've never tested before. A new person, for example, may want to try out all this new stuff, which is great once in a while, but we see that every game. What's happened is that there's no consistency - no attempt to actually improve a game based on experience. Whenever someone suggests something new, most reasons for disliking it are hypothetical, because it's never been tested. As a result, it's like previous mafia games never existed, and we then fall back on the same old strategy. Besides, everything 'new' is either designed to make a game more 'fair', or is a 'cool new role' that the game starter wants to try.

Yeah my smaller games worked out really well if anyone remembers those, I will probably go back to that format in the future. I just wanted to try out some new stuff here I have seen on other forums. Sorry it didn't work out. That idea about the seers only being able to ping and either see "mafia" or "citizen" might have worked well. The fact however that with everyone having a role, the game is too easy for citizens. I had hoped a few more wild cards(killing roles) would have fixed this, however that proved not so when both of them died early on. As for Ziazca's role, that guy is an evil bastard for figuring out that simple way to give himself away. I doubt most would have thought of it out right.

^I think Chaos or someone else did make a game where the seer can ping people but learn that they either a mafia or a townie. then they get a code that could represent they're role. The only people who knows what the code means are the roled townies themselves.

well the games themselves get stuck in the same pattern of seer/guardian/pinged person revealing themselves then getting protected. Townies then rally under them. The only reason townies lose on those games are either Townies didn't rally under it or they were to inactive. Mafias are left with no choice but try to learn who the guardian/seers is before they could win.

I tried to make a new completely different game before but I guess I ended giving the wolf too much advantage (conversions, no info on the dead, no guardian etc.) well it could have work but having an inactive seer automatically halves the chances of townies victory (and the seer even got lynched on day 2). =\

Sirus when does the new day start?
