New Mafia Game
Alright I am looking at making a new large scale mafia game.
So I am putting up this thread to discuss several matters:
- 1. Roles - I have most ready, they will be simple, and every player should have some role or another. This game will hopefully be balanced. I am taking into consideration the fact that most games like this tend to be way too skewed towards townies so I am personally thinking of ways to deal with this. So I am asking you guys about any possible ways which you think it could be balanced and if you guys have good role ideas.
- 2. Time - We will need a good time frame which supports the most people. Summer is coming up and I hope that this will help.
- 3. A second GM, to take my place if something comes up, this isn't needed but I realize I flaked on the last day of my last game. I am sorry but I had some personal problems, it shouldn't happen again, but you never know.
- 4. Special rules. There are a number of possible rules to think about bulletin board, double lynch, inactivity kills.
I realize a lot of this will be impossible if we don't get enough people, so I hope to tailor this game to support different numbers of people based on how many people we get this time and future games.
I will be posting my list of roles tomorrow till then leave some replies.

I'm in as well, and I'd like to see the roles before discussing special rules.
Depends on the timing. On the 9th of next month I'd be free from the clutches of physiology.
For inactivity kills, I have an idea. You can give someone a role, which is to kill one inactive person every day.
I'm in, although a basic layout on how the game is played would be nice.
Here are the roles I am looking at so far.
Coroner - Views the role of one person every night.
Mafia Boss - Requires at least 50% of the remaining players to vote for him to be lynched, can not kill unless other mafia members are alive. If he is killed while their are other members are alive, they get an extra kill that night.
Mafioso - Same as always, numbers will be affected by how many people sign up.
Martyr - No other deaths that night.
Paramedic - May save one person every night, can prevent aids, can prevent vampirism. The only person they may not save is their self.
Mayor - Vote during lynch counts as two, they can prevent a lynch but then all people lose faith in the mayor and he becomes inactive. If the mayor is killed a vote will be held the next night for the new one. Votes will be PMed to me and the result will be secret.
Detective - Their numbers are going to be affected by the number of people.
Masons - They begin with only two members, they can invite a new one every night. They have no special abilities other than knowing who each other are, new members may keep their roles secret. If there is a vampire and a mason is converted, all the masons are converted the next night if he isn't lynched.
Suicide Bomber - They can kill at any time even during the day. They are townie aligned though that doesn't mean they won't kill a townie. They die along with their victim.
Prostitute - They can block a role once a night and transmit AIDS, they can choose to be mafia or townie aligned, their alignment won't show up when pinged.
AIDS carrier - They are the first case of AIDS the only way the prostitute can get them is through this player.
Roles I am considering:
Vampire Sire - Can convert one person every other night, decides who the vampires kill the other. Certain rules will be made regarding what happens when and if they convert certain role'd players. (If we don't get the 20 people I want, this role can be removed)
Chief of Police - Known by everyone at the beginning of the game. He can't be killed or a mafia member will be revealed the following morning.
Necromancer - Revives a dead player every two or three nights.
Fool - The fool must change their vote to the most recent lynch vote when ever they make a post.
Priest - Gets a chance to kill a vampire every night, however if the person they choose isn't a vampire that person knows their role.
Shifty Villager - The person with this role seems to be mafia whenever pinged. On the plus side like the mayor, their vote counts as two votes.

So this will basically be a townies vs. Mafia vs. vampires game? Sounds complicated. I don't think there will be twenty people, though, so...
I don't think the Mayor vote thing will work. Obviously, the organized Mafia will vote for one of their own to be the Mayor, and since the townies won't be able to band together and group-vote on someone, the Mayor will become a secret mafioso. The Mayor can't be pinged, since no one knows who it is. I'd recommend either making this a townie role that people don't vote for, or taking it out altogether.
I also don't like the idea of a shifty villager. Playing around with pings becomes REALLY complicated and almost always ends up with townies losing. On the other hand, it is better than having a mafioso who shows up as human (=certain death for townies unless they get lucky), but I know I really wouldn't want to be that townie. If the person with that role is someone who almost always gets pinged/is asked to be pinged, they're screwed... and it's just not fun to play when you know there's really no chance you'll survive to the end, not unless the townies get lucky and win way before the end of the game.
If you still feel it's too skewed, add a mafia assassin. I don't like that role, because townies die too quickly, and because I feel that townies often cause enough chaos to give the mafia a fairly good chance at winning anyway - if the mafia play well. Of course, maybe others feel differently... I *have* been a townie in all but two of the MANY, MANY games I've played (and I got converted in one).
Yeah nothing is solid yet, it might just end up being another kill role that is only aligned to their self.

Not even a guardian is needed, just the townies, a detector job (or two) and the mafia.
True, and I have done smaller and simpler games in the past. This mostly me wanting to test a few new roles for fun. As for a simpler game, I am sure another will pop up eventually.
