next mafia game sign-up and discussion
OK, time for a new Mafia-game.
I wanted to make a normal game: mafia vs townies, no third party, no conversions.
The mafia have to kill a townie every night until they make up at least 50% of the towns population and the townies have to find and lynch the mafia members, before they reach their goal. Both start with an advantage:
The mafia know each other
The townies have a few rolled players with special powers
These are the basics and here are the basic roles:
Seer (1 player, 2 with ~20+ players)
Every night the seer can ping a player to get information about alignment and role of that player. The pinged player will be notified, that he got pinged.
Guardian (1 player)
Every night the guardian can chose to protect someone from a mafia-kill. Guardian can not protect himself.
Coroner (1 player)
Every night the coroner can examine the body of a dead player and get information about alignment and role of that player, because I won’t tell you.
Mafia-side (~1/5 of total player number)
Every night you can gather and decide who will die this night.
Dayphase will be 36 hours, nightphase 12 hours.
Mark your lynchvotes bold or they won’t get counted.
Rolled townies and mafia: I expect you night-activity-PMs at night, if the different timezones won’t allow that, send them during the day.
You’re not forced to lynch, you can placeholder forever but people will get multilynched on tie-votes.
Inactivity won’t get punished by death, these free extra-kills make it too easy for the mafia to win.
On every new day I will announce the ones who got lynched/killed and give you the number of remaining players.
And now, for additional rules/roles:
- Instead of killing at night, the mafia can change one lynchvote during the day.
- extra townie role: summoner/medium/whatever...
Every 1,2,3? nights he can chose a dead player. That player is allowed to talk in the thread on the next day. He’s still dead though ...
- extra townie role: bulletproof townie/lucky bastard/whatever...
This townie will survive one mafia-kill and can chose to “play dead” for a few days, no one besides the role above and the coroner could notice as long as he doesn't post
- extra mafia role: hitman/assassin/whatever...
Once every 3? days or every time one of his mafia friends gets lynched, the hitman can assassinate a townie in addition to the normal mafia-kill
- anything else you can think of ...
... for example bipolars chaos-teleporter-role:
I think the teleporter would be too powerfull, for example: the seer finds a mafia and tells the teleporter, he switches with mafia. Now the townies don’t need to lynch the pinged mafia, because if the teleporter draws enough attention, the mafia will target him and kill one of their own = devestating.
Or day 1: the guardian shouts “I’m the guardian, ping me (read: kill me)” the mafia know, that he can’t protect himself, so they target him, but the clever teleporter PMs the guardian and asks for protection. Now the mafia target the guardian, who switched with the teleporter, who ist protected by the guardian = guardian protects himself.
If you realy want to have the teleporter, we’ll have to ballance him out first.

if theres gonna be a teleporter. I suggest that they can only use it every 3 days or once/twice per game.
btw for the assassin. A kill every 3 days is good.
@ Teleporter; I said that he should be balanced out. I didn't think of the guard situation though, so you might deprive him from the protection of the guard. (Or if you want to think in detail about it, a guard can not switch positions with a teleporter.)
When I thought of the teleporter, I thought of the person as a mafia (i.e the townies know who he is, and they try to guess who he changed positions with).
You can make him switch once every 2/3 days, but it's still risky, since the person he switches with can get/killed/lynched.
Now first up, is the teleporter a mafia or a townie? (If townie, then he couldn't be protected by the guard for the reason comp stated..)
Second, how frequently can he switch bodies with (or how many times is he limited to do it)? (Once every 2 or 3 days, or maybe a maximum or 3/4/5 switches before his ability expires?)
You really don't have to put this role, but I kinda thought of it when I was converting people the last game. (I was trying too see who everybody would think I'd pick.). As a role, it is a powerful role, I was thinking of it as a substitute for the assassin of the mafia/townies.
I don't particularly like the teleporter role.
If we want to have balance for both the players and the two factions, we shouldn't have a role that can render previously gained information invalid. The townies depend on piecing together data to build a framework that they can operate by, it would be best if the information that is gained is stable instead of fluid.
^ Well that would be the ultimate goal of the teleporter. Disturb the townies/mafia, and stop them from achieving their goals, but anyways, if we're having a nice simple game, we should leave this role for another game that has more variety.
