Adonai felt he might be going crazy.
Nothing seemed to make sense any more. The alliance he had worked so hard to craft had fallen down around him, collapsing into flames like the warehouse in front of him. The people stood, watching, their eyes blank to the furiour oranges that leapt across their faces.
Bipolar stood a block away among a crowd of green shirts. He no longer bothered to wear the costume of a gang member, but instead he showed his double allegiances perfectly in an emerald suit and tie. He sneered. He wasn't looking at Adonai, but it felt as if he were mocking him nonetheless.
The people had given in to apathy. They knew who he was, there was no doubt about it. And yet, as that crucial moment had arrived, they'd done nothing. They knew that El Bisko had still been in there; they'd heard him calling for help as the flames began licking at his locked door. They saw his silhouette, outlines black against the deadly orange behind him, through the window.
But they'd done nothing.
A can of kerosene, a box of matches. Bipolar slipped them back into his pocket, that cruel smile still dancing over his features like the flames.
Adonai sighed, and turned back to those around him. They argued, their priorities split; they were getting nowhere.
They dispersed around midnight, the flames lighting their backs as they walked away from the spectacle that had entertained them all evening. It was mostly ashes now, a black frame smoldering lazily. The fire department had done nothing. No government officials had the nerve to come within ten blocks of MacArthur Park.
Flash had stayed out of the arguments of his teammates, staying particularly quiet as his friends and him watched the blaze. His death was fitting, then; quiet, unnoticed. Until the next morning, of course.
He was found lyning in the middle of the street, his throat slit. He hadn't struggled.
