The sun set as red as it rose.
Dante walked home, frowning at his shoes. Nobody believed him, did they? He heard a sound; the clatter of a can against the concrete ground. He looked up. A crowd of people stood before him, ski masks slung carelessly across their faces. There were a few green bandannas in among them, but for the most part they wore orange; his own West Gang.
Dante scowled at the silent figures before him.
"I'm not your man. Let me go."
A voice came from behind one of the ivory-white masks. Adonai's.
"You're lying. We know who you are, Dante; you can't hide from us."
Dante opened his mouth in response, but all that came out was a dribble of blood down his chin. He looked down in shock at the red that was rapidly spreading across his shirt. The echo of gunfire rang through the alley.
The mob walked out of the smoke that now filled the alley, pulling their masks off their faces in grim triumph. The clouds above rumbled ominously, mimicking the gunshots that had just filled the air. Raindrops fell.
Dante's body was found the next morning. The puddle of water he lay in, splashing in the continuing rain, was a brilliant crimson.
