The sun had set in the town square, yet the crowd had already dispersed and gone to their homes, preparing for the night. The square was nearly empty when a single figure walked up to the mayor and demanded his attention.
"Haven't you found a zombie?" she asked.
"No," adonai murmured. "We have no leads, and I told everyone that it would be best for us to wait for a new day and see what that brings us." He sighed sadly and turned to look at the dark sky. "Last thing I'll ever do."
"You're going to die?" She looked puzzled.
"Well - they're going to want to kill me, right?" adonai gave her a wry grin. "I'm the mayor. I have power, and I have contacts with the important townspeople. And there isn't anyone to guard me, either. They killed him" he added bitterly, kicking at a lone newspaper by the side of the road.
"We'll see," she said quietly. "You don't, by any chance, have a restaurant that sells ramen in this town, do you...?"
adonai shook his head and she sighed. "Ah well. Soup will do."
And with that, they departed to their respective home and inn room.
In the morning, the people gathered in the square to once more find an empty bulletin board. There was an air of impatience, as if they were expecting something sinister. Some news of a death...
But when they counted, there were still twenty-two...
Shrugging, they went on with their lives - or were about to, had El Gus not suddenly demanded why adonai was still alive. Obviously, he'd come to the same conclusions as the mayor had the previous night.
"I don't know," adonai explained. "I heard a pounding on my door in the early hours of the morning, and I was sure that I heard someone walking up the stairs, but nothing arrived. In the morning, there was nothing there."
The crowd stirred. Had adonai been saved by the guardian? But hadn't the guardian been murdered the night before?
It was a mystery. But no one had died, so all was well.
(I'm going to write more in future days, I think.)
