Thread: Suggestion -- new account activations

How about adding a short multiple choice to the validating emails to activate new accounts? For example:

Do you know there is a Search link you can use to find previously asked question such as "where can I download xxxx manga?"?
[] Yes
[] No

[Activate]

The account is activated only if the questions are correctly answered. That should help with the clutter of the same posts and should help to lighten up moderators work.

Good idea, we might have to start adding questions like this soon.

Just add a page where the user has to read and agree to the rules, kinda like the EULA you have to agree to when installing new software, then when they break the rules you won't have waste time handing out and keeping track of warnings, you can just ban them instead.

sure but people will just scroll to the bottom and it will work. so they will still break rules.

and those questions well if you add a question like that one with the search button, people will answer correct but will they use the search button? No cuz they are to lazy.

Its IMPOSSIBLE to not know about the gotdamn search button. Unless this is the first forum you have ever visited

Maybe you are right, but I'd give the newbies a benefit of the doubt. It's much faster to just go to martyr3810's sticky or search the forum to find a download link and start downloading than to post a question and wait for an answer.

Also, the questionaire is not limited to just searching the forum, but can contains all the pet peeves of the moderators too. Undoubtedly, some people will break a rule, but they'll do so knowingly and I think it's a small group. The questinaire answers should be mixed up too so that people don't just click the first choice in every question.

I actually read those guidelines and stuff. For one, it helped me avoid getting spyware from MSN Plus. You don't always have to click yes.

(Though I also use the search button, and always have, so...)

I think it would be worth it, because there always will be those people who will end up learning from it, and that is, of course, better than no one.

Yes,this was the first forum I've ever visited.
So i think this is a good idea.
I think there is a way to make people to read the rules first.
For example,I usually read the agreement before installing something,even if I skipped some lines here and there, I always read the lines in Bold or Caps.
Those people who have read the rules and ignore it on purpose,then they deserve to get banned.

well for some this was the first forum they ever came to (like ME) but i agree with HN05 there should be a way to make people read the rules first but i dont think an agreement will do it. the main reason people dont read those agreeements is cuz theyre too long not that they dont care. if you can find a way to make the most importatnt three rules concise and easy to understand and stick it right before their account is activated i guarantee that theyll have a much better chance of being read. naybe like having the activation button dead for 10 seconds so they have to read it before clicking [activate] would work well too

What I have seen some sites do, is have a user agreement page, but with no vissable link. That way, the user has to read the page to find out that s/he has to click on the first "o" (or some other letter or word) at the top of the page.

I hate those things. Half the time I can't even find the damn word they want me to click. It's really annoying and reminds me of cute pictures and "Oops! You didn't read! Tee hee!" kind of quotes.
