I was thinking... would it be possible to have a bit torrent tracker for certain releases? Maybe for full series, full volumes and new chapters posted here.
I don't know how much setting up a tracker costs, but I'm thinking that it could help this site.
Perfect, I was just going to create a post about this.
I think torrents would help eliminate a lot of the bandwidth usage, after all, that is the intent of it.
I feel guilty a lot of the time because I find myself downloading entire series because I want to read them, but I know how costly it can be on both the wallet and the bandwidth.
I also think that's a good option. I've seen it work in Boxtorrents, so it couldn't hurt giving it a try. And if we could get a Top Seeders list I'm sure it will encourage a lot of us into getting a good seed / leech ratio.
Would there be a problem if I create a torrent and seed it, with the respective credits to stoptazmo?
It recently dawned on me... What about using trackerless torrents?
Problem is it requires a beta release of bittorrent.
But you know, as long as the torrent file is published in a site with many visits, it should be a breeze. Seeding a manga chapter doesn't require a computer being 24 hours on.
Forgive my ignorance, but could you explain what a bittorrent is to the non net savy folk like me, could you also explain how to use it? :?
Btw. I know this is slightly off topic, but what is IRC? :?
YES OMG OMG OMG... i been thinkin that since i joined this site!!!! put up completed volumes and series up for Bittorent DL i mean id even create and seed the torrents myself !!!! cuz i got like 3 gigs of manga from ST on my laptop itd be awesome!!!!
ps i wish a mod or the founder would post on this... be very helpful (and another reason id support if donations were accepted (im broke tho) is if a BT tracker were added...)
Well, this would be a good idea. The thing is many people have a hard enought time reading our rules, I do not know if many of them could figure out how to use Bittorrent.
The only real thing holding me back from using bittorrent in addition to direct downloads, is the time it would take to seed each file and find people to seed each chapter or volume.
That's why I was thinking full series and full volumes. Seeding individual chapters is tough. Very tough. But, seeding a whole series with one torrent instead of, say, X (where X is the number of chapters) torrents. For incomplete series, it's easy enough to do packs of volumes. For example, you could have a torrent file "Naruto Volumes 1-10", "Naruto Volumes 11-20", "Naruto Volumes 21-30", and so on (I don't know how far Naruto is, so it could be more or less to this, I'm just using Naruto as a quick example). You could also have "Naruto Chapters 1-295 (Or whatever they're at, I don't know)" torrent that would update, say, every two weeks.
For new chapters, I'd say put them on torrent files for 3 days and then take them off the tracker afterwards.
Anyway, these are just a bunch of ideas I had.
Maybe completed series could have torrents for the entire manga. And using the right clients you can select not to download volumes you already have. (Breaking it up into chapters might make it too hard perhaps, like you said? Or maybe it is manageable?)
That might lower strain on the servers anyway.
