Thread: my thoughts

for the feedback section it said :Tell us your thoughts and ideas for this forum and our site. so ya, i had some thoughts. first id like to say this site is a dream come true. (one goal in my life is to read all manga, probably not possbile and probably a weird goal). im still newbish to all this manga stuff, but i noticed some mangas are discontinued or on pause(hunter x hunter) cause of various reasons(sombodys sick). i was wondering if it would be possible to show if a series was discontined or put on pause. note this is not a request. just a statement that i wish to here some feedback on. i dont want to cause excess work or banning(of me. i see so many bans in so many threads as it is). i also have some questions that if may lead to banning just ignore the question completely.

first is how do you decide what mangas to add to the site? do you look for the ones that most people dont know about to give it the attention it deserves? just random pickings?

second is on other manga sites there are always alot of downloaded series left unfinished cause of legal issues like licsening or something like that. does that mean some mangas can only be obtained by purchasing them?

third is you guys seem to get along pretty well, how did you guys all meet? was it all cause of tazmo?

Finally(not so serious question) is do some of you guys enjoy banning? cause i keep getting this feeling sooner or later im gonna slip up (or i might have already) and get banned stamped on my head.

well thanks for reading and possibly replying to my questions. im sorry if this stretched more into a Q&A then an expression of thoughts. this may be grounds for a ban(not sure) if it is please just give me a warning.

FYI: ive downlaoded the first chapter of every manga of A and up. after i get all the A and up chapters downloaded, i plan to add my own toughts (or review critic, whatever its called) to each one. i already store them into certain folders based on my opinion of the manga. In order: Favorites, Forced between a rock and a hard place, good but not great, one time read, stinks it does, and zxy new(this is just for the ones not read yet). tell me what you think please. id like to know if this is unique, dumb, or both.

Yeah, this has been discussed before, it probably won't get done, since it would be a lot of work to check up on every manga, list them as inactive and then keep an eye on them for when/if they become active again.

Obviously the more popular long running series will probably get chosen (since they're the ones that most people are probably gonna want).
As for the other series, I don't know. Its all up to Kane (the admin, aka Kevin Shiel), weather he listens to recommendations from a friend, reads good reviews or just uploads series on a whim, I honestly don't know, however he does seem to try and host a variety of genres, so its probably not just personal taste.
However he chooses though, he does not accept requests. But you probably already realised that (you should do, its in the rules).

What it means is that those sites are honest enough to not host series illegally.
If a series is unlicensed, then it is not illegal to translate or own a fan translated copy provided it is not distributed for profit. However as soon as the series is licensed (i.e. a company buys the rights to translate and market the series outside of Japan or wherever the series originates from), it becomes illegal to translate, own or distribute any copies not published by the company that holds the rights to the series.
Many sites choose not to host these series once they become licensed, mainly so that they can avoid any legal problems, but also to encourage people to go out and buy the series to help support the manga industry in their country.

Oh wow, thats a whole can of worms you've opened up, this site and its users have one hell of a history.
Here is brief history, you might want to skip the first two posts though.
In summary, yes some of the older users met because of Tazmo, but most of us originally joined this site just for the downloads (me included) but then we started talking in the forums and eventually we stared coming here for the forums more than the downloads (I don't download here anymore, I only come for the forums).
It takes time though, most of us when we first came here, kept a low profile and tried not to step on anyones toes, and thats really the best way to do things. If you come here and act big headed, you get rejected by the community, we don't like brazen idiots; but if you act respectful and can put forth good intelligent arguments in discussions, you earn the respect of the members and are accepted into the community. After that you start to get to know the other members, make some good friends and have a really good time. Us older members tend to treat each other as equals, I'm a mod and yet some of the other members are quite happy to taunt me and I don't mind, its all fun.

I'm a new mod, so to me banning is a novelty, but I don't necessarily enjoy it. Some of the older mods probably get fed up with banning people (we ban a lot of people), but there are times when it is fun, especially when you get some idiot who breaks the rules and then argues with the mods while trying to defend himself. You also get those who do something so spectacularly stupid that everyone laughs. And then there are also times when some people will just plain insult a mod, we don't care about the insults, but we have good fun when the community flames the idiot. N00b traps are also quite fun.

About what mangas Kane is uploading, it seems to me that hes going in alphabetical order. The last three major updates have all been lots of manga from letters A, B, and C. The manga is arranged in alphanumeric order and A-C takes up half the list. Just my little two cents.

I've noticed the same thing as Steal; a lot of those manga are also short, or not very well-known, so it's probably not just a case of which ones are popular. (Although maybe that thing about not adding the requests has something to do with it?)

Also, about banning... yes. I, for one, enjoy banning - because those I ban are just incredibly stupid and didn't read. ^_^ So I enjoy educating people. (And writing ban reasons.) Still, most of us don't ban just for fun; there's a reason behind it. ^____^

It's possible but would take far too much time for us to do.

When we first opened I tried to get the more popular manga series. Now days it's pretty much just going in A, B, C order and get whatever manga series I that we don't have.

No, I don't like banning. It's really sad that I have had to ban so many people for not taking a minute out of their day to read our rules. The majority of people I ban are people who post in the help section incorrectly or request manga series.
