indeed, why asking people to search the forum if they can't necro ???
if a topic is "finished", then it should be lock to avoid necroing, but if it is still an open subject i don't see what's bad about necroing it...
I hate recommendation threads completely. Its just lazy to ask other people what you should watch rather than go and discover and try out series for yourself (which quite frankly is half the fun of being an anime and manga fan).
For example: the other day I was on fansub.tv looking at the embedded AMVs they have on the front page (the selection is randomised) and I saw one called butterfly. I knew that butterfly was referring to the song butterfly from one of the DDR OSTs and I kinda like the song (its catchy). What I didn't know, was that the video montage was from a series called Princess Tutu (search youtube for princess tutu butterfly). Its about a duck that is transformed into a girl and she has to ballet dance to save the prince, it looks unbelievably cheesy yet the more I read about it the more I wanted to know, and I spent ages looking for info and watching a few more AMVs.
I have no intention of ever watching this series (despite the surprisingly high rating it has on ANN), but I had damn good fun finding out about it.
And I strongly disagree. Word-of-mouth -- that is, recommendations -- is the best way to find new works or ones you'd overlooked by your own channels. The group mind is more powerful than your own. (If not necessarily smarter.)
Frankly, without recommenation threads, I'd have no reason to bother with the forums.
Recommendation threads are bullshit. There are so many Manga's out there that different people like.
Way i see it, we should have one sticky recommendation thread with the different genres, and their most popular Manga's.
But that could get complicated... Couldn't it?
I actually like recommendation threads. Helps me learn about new manga's and animes. Word of mouth, the rumor mill, and all that. However, recommendation threads, in their current state, suck.
I like the recommendation threads with some intelligence in them, with some time and care put into posts. If someone takes the time to go into what they like, why they like it, and if people respond with an anime or manga, and provide a good, concise description, well, I think it can be a very good thing. But you need both of those.
Also, I think one thread that separates genre's could be bad, because there are so many manga's that have several genre's. Take for example Mahou Sensei Negima, which has:
Straight shounen action
Slice of Life

I realise what your getting at, It came to mind after I posted actually.
I figured something more along the lines of this:
-One piece - Fairy Tale
And so on. It could even be more in-depth with little summery's under each title. As I said there are so many Manga's, and even Manhua out there, so categorising all of them (seeing as everybody has a different preference) would take too much time.
Another partial solution would be to make one singular recommendation thread. It would limit the amount of repeat threads. Only problem is nobody would look through the previous pages, so we would have people asking the same thing every 10 or so pages.
