Learning Mandarin would be a far better option seeing how the Chinese economy is expanding in the international marketing zones and that they are exporting human resources everywhere in the world (more like immigration).

Well it's just that I find it dumb that otakus want to learn a language just because they like anime series. =\

Don't say that I am wrong because personal experience at anime convention proved that I am right.

Or even better; get your English right before attempting to learn another language.

I honestly don't see the point of learning Japanese when all of the manga here have conveniently been translated into English. Its like going to a scanlator and saying you've put a lot of effort into translating this, so I'm gonna learn Japanese just to spite you.

That true... Before learning any language we should improve our own language...

    Mandarin is good...

Well look at the percentage of members here who can't even type English properly. It really is shocking and makes me want to ban them all.

But then there would only be about 20 members left.

What I had planned when posting was to give the otakus some knowledge of what they are saying in the animeshows and thus not rely on the translations as much, which, in my case has given me more enjoyment now out of all the anime I've watched since I started learning(and annoyment aswell, befor I didn't mind all the "dattebayo" that Naruto always splurted out but now I get irritated as hell =/ ).

And the examples posted in my first post was... well, just some random things tbh, an more structured thread will come(yea I plan on doing some easy lessons, nothing hard, just start with the basics) when I do it over.
Make sure you read it when I get it up, I'll post it in the "chit chat" section.
And English is also my second language which might make some of my grammar somewhat harder to read(although I got an B overall on my "Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English", e-peen =D).

And to Keis, thanks for that very fine extention "no", and when the real thread comes up I won't be doing things halfheartedly, this was just an easy example.

Learning Hiragana and Katakana is just a bunch of memorization, learn those then go consult a Furigana dictionary or online J/E dictionary. This way you don't have to rely on other people for help.

    A kanji book?!

What a horrible friend. That's like trying to teach you to run before you can crawl.

Learn Hiragana first. Then Katakana. Then Kanji.

    meannie...

don't make fun of me =P

I'm learning Japanese cause I like it more than Chinese...(yay anime!) It's probably not the most practical knowledge in the world since Japanese market isn't booming. (and everyone knows China will be the next super power in like 20 years)

But heck.. I rather learn something I want to learn. I've taken many years of Chinese lessons with minimal success mostly cause I don't have much interest in it...

Oh.. and also cause I enjoy introducing myself as "the twinkie." It gives me 0 pressure when we're at Chinese resturaunts. I let everyone else order for us so we can enjoy our Commie meal ^__^.

That's nothing. All my co-workers are Chinese, 40% of our customers are Chinese and 80% of the phone calls we get are in Mandarin.
Naturally, I am quite useless when it comes to deal with these things.
