But if you look at it this way you could also say that Ruffy always does the same (stretching). That is his style, so of course he'll use it. Just like gray is an ice mage and Zorro uses swords. That's just how it is.
The manga is still relatively young and there is a lot of room (and time) for charcter development andimprovement, but it clearly has a lot of potential.

And I don't think it's that predictable either. You know that in the end the good guys will win, Natsu will finish the bad guy and nobody will die, but the same can be said about One Piece.
Sure, it's more predictable than One Piece and storywise not as deep, but if you compare any manga to One Piece in any aspect, it'll lose (that's just not fair). And why compare it to one Piece at all? The only thing they have in common is the drawing style and the fact that both are adventure mangas. Why not compare it to another manga about magic?
Jesus christ I wished this would change, plus remove the amount of humor in midst combat and FT would probably be as enjoyable as manga giants like Naruto. I feel that characters HAVE to die in order for a manga to be epic. It's just too much of a fairy tale if everyone always gets out alive...I also felt that the manga would have been better if Ezra died. I was really disappointed when I saw Natsu carrying her -_- that was really lame.

edit: oh yeah shimon died which was good, considering how big this arc was.

How would a shounen manga that's all about nakama work like that?
We have only a handful of fleshed out memorable characters in Fairy Tail. If you kill off one of them each arc just to do that differently, soon enough we'll run out of characters.
Or should the manga make up and introduce new ones all the time. Characters he'd first have to flesh out in the manga to make the readers like them so they will accept them when he kills of the old characters everyone liked like gray or ezra.
Or maybe he should follow the totally unpredictable Star Trek formula and introduce someone that ends up dying all the time?

Not to mention that the whole reason to fight for your nakama get's a bit undermined if they die all the time.

Let's face it. This is a shounen so the good guys don't die. That's just how it works.
Let some background characters die that we readers do not know or like, but that are still important to the characters (they are their nakama too even if we don't know them), and let them come out of the battles alive. I like it that way in shounen mangas. It lacks unpredictability, but at least you don't have to go through things you otherwise would've to go through. Like loosing someone that you've grown to like. Or wondering and waiting when Kurono will be back (in Gantz)., or who'll die this time.

    >_> By your definition, One Piece is a total failure.
