Why do the Dragon Slayers always get beat up before they show what they are really capable of? Overused story element anyone?
That´s fuckin standard.Not only in shounen manga though...
Both Natsu and Gazeel love a challange.
Natsu doesn't get serious unless he really needs to, because he's easygoing.
Gazeel loves playing with his prey, like a bored cat.
Both approach all new enemies the same way they always do, which gets them beat up by anyone who knows his stuff.
The fact, that they can easily regenerate by eating their element stops them from being careful about any injuries they might sustain.
And they've got this Goku&Vegeta thing going on, that they get stronger when pushed too hard, which is by now a standard shounen power :P

Gazeel winning was...predictable. I did like the flashback though. Was pretty cool.
