honestly, this last chapter very interesting one..the new team collaboration really looking forward into it..hiruma's team look like most overpowered..kurita apply on what hiruma's doing real funny..and mamori actually getting along with hiruma...last is there still no info on hiruma's backstory..

Yeah. Having Agon and Yamato in the same team is already an instant win, but plus Akaba and Taka?? THAT'S CRAZY!!

I liked it. I liked it. This series had really started to rot after the Ojou game, especially during that bloody awful World Youth Cup arc, but this was a really good ending. It was excellent how they realised that who wins the final match didn't actually matter and also made both the most likely (and also the most appropriate player) the MVP rather than just making it Sena (Panther had stated in his first arc that his ultimate goal was to make the pros and this was the best way to do it). The teams are interesting, although it's a touch odd we don't see where all the players ended up (and rather irritating that they didn't seize even this last chance to do something with the girls, although it's a nice touch that Mamori is still with Hiruma). I DID laugh out loud at the part about Karin having to draw a manga about Eyeshield 21. All in all a better than expected ending to the series. My final assessment of the series as a whole: 8/10.

I thought the whole rice bowl tournament was juts a play on words and it doesn't exist but ...
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rice_Bowl
    it's real

The Ending's quite nice. I like how panther won and received the MVP award. I do agree with everyone that the American team could have won at the end but Sena made some nice moves that made him a second best after Panther.

but I thought Hiruma said something about the devilbats ending this year when he graduates?

Saikyoudai, the name itself is a give away that they'll be the best team. The best players with Hiruma as the Head tactician. What are the chances on winning against that? >_<

Actually, I think Musashi's team has a chance at that. ^^ It's a team constructed out of pure power - Gaou, Tetsuma AND Musashi on one team? Plus the rest of the linemen as well. They can simply blast through any resistance, then kick to finish. Even with Yamato and Banba on the opposing side, it's not enough. Plus, remember that Kid was the only quarterback who managed to successfully nullify Hiruma's tactics completely. And Musashi isn't stupid either, and he knows Hiruma. Tricks won't work against those two. Their only weakness is the lack of receivers to go against Taka and Ikkyu.

Also, thematically, this manga is interesting, because it's slightly different from the other sports manga. The central theme of Eyeshield 21 seems to be "It's fun to challenge the strong". Most other shounen battle / sports manga would have "I want to be the best", or "I want to find the meaning of true strength" as their theme, but Eyeshield 21 has always been the case of the average-ability team or the ordinary man desperately challenging those who are stronger than them... not necessarily because they want to win, but because there's meaning in the process. Sena and Panther, Sakuraba and Shin, Unsui and Agon, Monta and almost every other receiver... all of them felt the same. Even Gaou was a restatement of that theme.

That's why I felt the ending really stood out well, especially with the talk between Unsui and Riku. They clearly stated the theme of Eyeshield 21 and capped it all off very well. "It's fun to challenge and defeat the strongest!"

amazing series when it started. i honestly hate pretty much every sports manga i have ever read but this one i love. while i do agree after they made it to the finals by beating the white knights it did feel a bit like it went down hill. I think the last chapter verified what i though that since panther was am important rival they just made a lack luster story arc to have it shown how panther was doing and have him fight sena at the same time. Despite this the very last chapter was amazing. the hiruma like kurita, the fact the cell trick doesnt work on the college level, the new teams. there are a few things i wish i could learn but i wont be able to now like a bit more about hiruma and his father. if suzuna and mamori are dating who i think they should. If monta ever ate anything besides banana (joking there) and how the team worked in the second year with the three starters not able to play but i assume that hiruma and yuki would have helped some in other ways. With that i am rambling and have decided to end my post with this. for a sports manga to draw in someone who doesnt watch sports and hasnt liked any sports manga he has read before eyeshield has done a great feat.

edit: alright i looked over it again and while you dont see daikichi at least that i noticed you do see the haha brothers. jumonji is with banba talking about hiruma blackmailing the principle leading me to believe that he could be in that school as well. after all he is the smartest of the brothers. also it looks like the other 2 are in the construction babies team with musashi and onihei.

Yeah, besides the already mention superstars, Saikyoudai has Banba along with Ikkyuu and the best of the Ha-Ha brothers. They even have someone as capable as Mamori as manager. Saikyoudai also seems to be the top university academic-wise as well.

Sena's university has a pretty strong team though so it will be interesting. They also have Gaou teamed up with Musashi and Kid so that's always cool.

Wow, the series really redeemed itself with the ending. i pretty much agree with the consensus here:

    - good job on having Panther as MVP. i thought it'd be hiruma, but Panther was a one-man wrecking ball on offense, as well as being incredible on defense too (stopped the dragonfly).

    - the teams are good: hiruma's team is clearly overpowered, but it fits with theme of having regular people try their hardest against the greatest talents, and finding meaning in the fight.

    - a lot of the necessary closure was provided. but like arcane azmadi, i do wish the mangaka resolved the relationships. i also wish he tied up the "hiruma's father" mystery too

the high point for me was the shinryuuji arc. every touchdown was a masterpiece and there were some awesome one-liners (devils don't ask gods for favors).

the low point is obviously the crap that filled the space between oujou and the ending

good art, character design, humour and a touch of drama. 7/10 for me.

Oh, by the way... the mystery about Hiruma's father WAS cleared up, some time ago. Clifford did research and showed Panther that Hiruma's dad was a chess champion of Japan who favoured ultra-offensive tactics. But this didn't work at the international level, so he retired in disgrace. Interesting how the son followed in the father's footsteps.
