Anime like Moribito
So my project to get my housemate to watch more anime by running through Moribito aka Seirei no Moribito was a success. Which means -- I need to come up with more series to watch that are "like that." Since I watch far less than I read, this is something of a challenge. With some drawn out questioning, we worked out that what sold the show was:
- "women being competent"
- "the details of daily lives"
- "high stakes"
Fortunately I don't have to come up with another show immediately, as we've started on Cross Game -- which despite the total lack of awesome female spear-wielders or the fate of an entire country being at stake, seems to be working. But -- what to comes after this? What else is "like that"?
FWIW, my housemate was raised on Battle of the Planets (aka Gatchaman) and Star Blazers (aka Space Battleship Yamato) and loves 80% of the output of Studio Ghibli more than just about any other movie ever, but the only other anime TV series they've finished is Revolutionary Girl Utena. So not a complete novice, but rather picky. Note that very long is probably not the best fit -- a shorter series is better, in fact. Despite, yanno, going on to Cross Game.
Any suggestions appreciated.
idk if you are still looking for recommendations, but.....
people suggest "anime like..." for just about everything on this website. of the ones listed there, i've seen:
- claymore - loved it, lots of people didn't like ending. then again, manga (haven't read yet) is ongoing and they summed up the anime with 2 episodes that aren't really based on the manga (so i hear) - a badass chick is protecting a kid in both of these. also, i love the way they say "claymore"
- blood+ - great anime, involves vampires (if you like that) but one of the best parts for me is the way the story unravels and you find out about the past as the episodes go on. warning, you may be bawling by the end like i was
- princess mononoke - its a move, but it is the first anime anything i ever saw and loved it.
i know it's three month later, but maybe these suggestions can still be helpful.
Heh. Lessee -- Claymore is a thought, but I strongly suspect it's bit horrific for housemate's tastes. Blood+ has possibilities -- I like the manga, and hadn't realized it's been adapted. The gender politics might skieve housemate out, but it's worth a shot. Prince Mononoke, OTOH, has already watched several times already -- see above about Studio Ghibli.
Thanks for the recs.
oooo sorry about princess monoke, didn't realize that in OP. it's been a while since i watched claymore, but i feel like blood+ was just as horrific/gory. i had a huge list of all the anime i watched on my comp (before it crashed and i had to get a new one) but i will see if i can think of anything else.
