Looking for a sad manga!
I'm the kind of person who really likes sad fiction; the more I cry, the better.
So I'd like to get recommendations for manga with lots of characters, who have many layers (both personality-wise and emotionally), and maybe some tragic backgrounds and such. I want to feel empathy for them, cry on their behalf and maybe relate to some of them to some degree. It should be the kinds of feelings that can be experienced in real life, though the plot doesn't need to be very realistic. Also, I like it when there's a good deal of focus on relationships. Long story put short, what I want is a touching manga with emphasis on the characters.
Also, a good amount of humor would be nice, it allows for some fresh breath amidst all the drama. ^^'
A good example on my description is Fruits Basket. It's one of my favorite mangas, and often gets me crying.
It would be nice if someone could recommend a manga somewhat familiar. ^^
Deep Love Trilogy
//those 6 match your describtion
//those 2 are sad too but they are not the typical kind of tragedy
( ... damn. Yotsuba&! doesn't count as sad, does it.)
Add to Ferozban's:
Voices of a Distant Star
Tenshi Nanka Ja Nai
Please Save My Earth
+1's to Deep Love, Basilisk, Battle Royale, and all of vphamv's. +infinity to Saikano; it's the saddest manga I've ever read in my short pathetic life.
Hoshi no Koe (Voices of a Distant Star's manga counterpart)
Aishiteruze Baby (just the ending, really)
Gantz (see Battle Royale and Basilisk)
Full Metal Panic! (the light novels...yes, people actually die)
Cowboy Bebop (don't bother with the manga, watch the anime)
Eden: It's an Endless World
Mars (wins award for angsty-est shoujo ever)
Air (both manga/anime)
Kimi ga Nozomu Eien
Tsukihime (just the game)
Elfen Lied (okay, so I have a weakness for crazy girls...sue me)
what they suggested...
i think Nana could top it
Hoshi no Koe is very emotionally bittersweet
I actually liked manga Hoshi no Koe better than the original anime. The ending was more...optimistic, in a way.
+ 2x infinity

Both in the anime and the manga, I found him kissing his childhood friend as she lay dying to be the most emotional scene I've read and watched, ever.
I also prefered the manga of Voices of a Distant Star, if only because the ending was slightly more satisfying. Both excellent.
