GTO- Great Teacher Onizuka - An ex-gangster goes back to school to become a teacher. The thing is the students are chaotic and even dangerous. But the martial arts master / pervert / heart warming Onizuka sets everything right with his fist and what little smarts he has <~~>
(Just read GTO!)

Vagabond - Follows the story of Musashi and how he became one of the greatest samurais of Japan during his era. The art is amazing, the fighting scenes are really well drawn with power and gore.

Ares - A Korean Manhwa. Story revolves around 3 people that meet in a war. They each have a hidden past, and reasons for what they do. This is a good series with non stop fun, and it has good funny moments at random times.

Eden - Its and Endless World - I can never really describe this series too well. Its set in a near future, where a virus has began a slow and eventual death of the human race. The story follows a boy whos father is a crime lord, but it isn't an easy world for anyone. What I can say is that this has one of the most original and interesting plot out there.

Monster - Psychological, Mystery, Death, Human Nature, Pain, Greed, Right, Murder, Life, Doctors.... well thats all I can say about monster. My descrip doesn't do it justice, but its something you'll have to check out. Its finished though.

I second Monster and Berserk. Both have tremendous depth and are quite long.

Don't forget:

School Rumble (almost done)

Some more of adachi mangas:
Miyuki

Kimagure Orange road -> It's like Ichigo 100% but old school. If you haven't read Ichigo 100% then you better read this first or you'll be skipping a lot of chapters of KOR.

Rookies: thugs turn baseball players. A lot like GTO focused on baseball.
Tagalog: "Bababa ba?"
English: "Are you going down?"

The ones I know and read, all old or obvious, but maybe you dont know anyway
-3x3 Eyes
-Angel Heart (City Hunter has many chapters, but only 31 chapters translated)
-Bastard! (must be bought, few chapters in the net)
-Battle Angel Alita/Gunnm + Last Order
-Berserk
-Claymore (not yet 100 chapters)
-Great Teacher Onizuka
-Houshin Engi
-Mahou Sensei Negima!
-Rurouni Kenshin
-Tenjou Tenge

Oh! There are two long ones from Rumiko Takahashi... But maybe youve already heard of them...

I can't believe no one mentioned Detective Conan. Hajime no Ippo is also very long. If you want a long manga that is completed, I recommend Monster and 20th Century Boys. 666 Satan is not very long but it's completed and it's a good manga.

As I just wrote it everywhere else...
Shin Angyo Onshi is good, just 80 chapters, but some are very long. 17 Volumes is long, as I see it.
Excel Saga is long, but only few chapters are scaned and not all volumes are still available... But if you like strange humour (not the same as the anime, more complicated) you should try to get it.
