Try Aishiteruze Baby. It's far from typical shoujo, and I found it to be a heartwarming read.

I'd recommend Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, Kare Kano and definitely Saikano.

OP will cry manly tears of emoness after watching the first and last of your recommendations T__T

Just finished reading Midori Days (Midori no Hibi), now downloading the anime. It's one of those manga that has great characters, but could have used a better writer. Regardless, it was a heartwarming read (man I seem to be using "heartwarming" a lot lately); certain parts of it were pure genius. As in, I actually laughed out loud reading it :P

Now I want a girl stuck on my right hand...

The guy in Midori Days was just too nice. If it were me...

Actually, what I'd do with a girl on my right hand probably isn't fit for print :/

@barny21: Kimi ga Nozomu Eien is an anime, 14 episodes of emo angsty melodramatic goodness. It's based on an eroge game, iirc.
