I second Itsumo Misora, of course.

Initial D is a manga about night-racing, and a genius driver Takumi, who can race down Mount Akina's slopes in an old, beat-up delivery car. It's well worth a read - at least the first arc. The second arc (Project Initial D) starts to get a little stale, though.

Itazura na Kiss is a simple, fairly predictable, but entirely enjoyable shoujo romance. The boy that Kotoko likes outright rejects her immediately upon her confession, causing her to be the laughingstock of the school. She swears never to have anything to do with him again... but when she gets home, she finds out that her house is under renovations and her father has made arrangements for them to stay with a friend of his. And guess who happens to be the son of that family? Can Kotoko hold on to her resolve when the boy she likes is just a room away in the same house? (Btw, there was also a live-action drama adaptation made of this, called "It started with a kiss", and my sister assures me that it's quite good as well)

Actually, I was going to disrecommend Itazura na Kiss. I found the story annoying -- it doesn't even have the virtue of being good-hearted -- and the art bad enough to remove what little pleasure I was getting. Maybe it gets better past volume 1, but it's one of what I think of when someone says "mediocre ShoujoMagic series."

Well, I agree it's a mediocre ShoujoMagic series, and I had some issues with the art myself, but I still enjoyed it. Then again, perhaps our different opinions might be because Itazura na Kiss was only my fifth shoujo series at the time, so thus I hadn't encountered enough to recognise and get bored by cliches yet. I hardly read it any more now, but I still think it serves as a nice introductory series for people unfamiliar with shoujo. Then again, my tolerance for "same old, same old" might be higher than a lot of other people's (how else can you explain why I'm able to read over 50 high school stories and yet still want more? :P).

Hmm -- that's possible. Though I also still want more high school series, even after working through ShoujoMagic's backlist. I'd just like, yanno, good high school series.

Shoujo can be so much better than that one. Better shoujo = better introduction. It's much like for science fiction that way. Point 'em at Penguin Brothers instead.

And here we see a Digital_Eon in its natural enviroment, displaying characteristic fangirl behaviour. Notice how happy it seems after finding some of its favourite food to feast on.

Count Cain seems fairly interesting although I confess to not having read very much.
