can't believe akai is dead o.O but then again rena left him lying on the seat, but then again, unless my eyes are wrong rena left him lying down on the seat, but it shows his body burning while sitting up.
i think he's dead. the narrator did say that only one silver bullet was needed, *and* conan was left with an important clue.
*quite* shocking. i didn't expect the narrator to kill off one of the coolest/important characters. but yah, best chapter i've read from DC in awhile. at this rate, we're actually going to be winding down to the conclusion !
i do think he's dead aswell, but who knows, there could be a twist somewhere in there, like akai needed ppl to think he's dead for him to do something in secret
I rather doubt Akai is dead.
First of all, it's really not Gosho's style to kill off main characters.
Secondly, in terms of story, Akai is too savvy and experienced an agent; he must have taken precautions into order to avoid falling into the trap. Just because he says no one else is around doesn't mean he would completely drop his guard in front of Rena. As someone who has gone through many desperate measures in order to infiltrate the Black Organization, Rena's request for help to flee the Organization is very much out of character. And with the first shot hitting his chest ... you can't seriously say that Akai, knowing how dangerous the Black Organization is, didn't even bother to wear something so basic as a bullet-proof vest?
Thirdly, considering the position of the Porshe, he must have stopped his car on the opposite side of the road deliberately in order to create a blind spot between what Gin could see from the car and what he could see from the camera installed on Rena. Rena herself is pretty smart; she must have been able to signal discreetly after having noticed where Akai parked. Of course, her thinking, "Please don't think too badly about me" could mean that she didn't attempt to do such a thing -- or that she does actually hurt him, but not enough to kill him (otherwise he can't really think badly about her).
There's also the issue with his stance. He's about to be shot to death ... and he has one hand in his pocket?? A normal person would at least react with sufficient pain or shock to remove their hands from their pockets, and most likely try to support himself and cover up the wound. That's just too unnatural a pose, and he maintains it even after being shot twice and falling into the car. Furthermore, he's not a normal person -- he's a seasoned FBI agent. If no one really was around, he still could have disabled her shooting arm with his own gun after the first shot and fled the scene. He could have saved himself and only give Rena a minor injury -- but he didn't even try to fight.
So what's the point? The police say the right hand of the corpse isn't burned and allows for fingerprinting ... but that would mean he was planning from the start to make sure that if he gets shot, blown up and burned, this will allow his corpse can be identified. That's a bit of a stretch to me ... (And incidentally, if there weren't police nearby, a pocket wouldn't have prevented the hand from getting burnt anyway.) Still, if that is the case, my guess is that he has one hand in his pocket to make sure that the Black Organization sees it and realizes that his corpse may be identified by the unburned hand. They'll be certain that Akai is dead once they see the FBI identify a corpse with an unburned hand (hence Vermouth being nearby and seeing Jodie in tears).
As for the fingerprints ... Conan says himself that he has two cellphones that look exactly alike. Just because he lends this one to Jodie doesn't mean it is the same one he lent to Akai. Nevertheless, it does also imply that the person in the car was someone who once touched Conan's cellphone. It would be interesting to backtrack and see who has come into contact with it. Perhaps some victim who died when involved with the FBI, and whose corpse Akai could have stashed in the car?
Also, who knows how much planning has gone on between Conan and Akai? How could he seem to know something's up with the FBI and even wish Jodie good luck just because the serial number of his cellphone has changed? There's definitely a some sort of pre-planned trick on the cellphone, alerting Conan that something has happened with Akai (as planned, seeing from Conan's hesitation to say anything and his somber expression?) when his cellphone was withheld.
Therefore, my conclusion is Akai is most likely not dead. He's just lying very, very low -- low enough to fool both friend and foe -- to move on to another step in some complex plan.
EDIT: Also of interest is that this is the first time Conan's fingerprints have been noted in canon (I think?). Gosho, I'm sure, is also aware of the possibilities of that plot device (seeing that it has been used in a non-canon storyline), so it is unlikely that this little detail would have been a mistake and have no follow-up. Since Conan wasn't at the HQ when the fingerprints were being verified, it had to be by database. The FBI aren't revealing who the corpse is, so the police will probably be doing a database search on the third set of fingerprints. Will we see someone accidentally run Conan's fingerprints through the check? Anyone care to bet on how long it'll take before certain members of Tokyo's finest finally pick up the Shinichi-Conan link via fingerprinting?
EDIT 2: Urgh, which then begs the question, if it really was planned, then it would have been foolish for Conan to let his fingerprints lead back to Shinichi. Perhaps the database has already been hacked and modified to give Shinichi a different set of prints. So much for any progress on that front then ... *sigh*.
wow that's a long post, i didn't even notice his hand, if his hand was inside his pocket the whole time, he could've had one of those fake explosion things that stuntmen use. The thing is, rena was hesitant to shoot him in the head and although it would be easy to fake a gunshot wound to your chest, one to the head is hard. Then again his beany could be a bulletproof beany :p
and one other thing i just noticed is how rena put the bomb next to his shoulder, so when it exploded his body should be at least partially damaged, but it doesn't look like it was when it was burning.
Ummm, I was thinking that maybe the cell phone that was given to Jodie for her to borrow wasn't really Conan's, maybe it was the water defective one of that bad guy, and then they fixed it, and used the bad guy's corpse for this. It would be perfect since he touched the phone, is dead, and had a bullet through his head.
I know, lots of plot holes in my reasoning, but it could happen. Can't wait for the next chapter~ ^o^
the next few chapters are already out at Knightus. looks like the BO arc has really ended now
in any case, i doubt he was wearing a bullet-proof vest: after he got shot, he was spewing blood from his mouth. in addition, he was shot in the head with gin looking on - gin is no idiot: a simple trick wouldn't deceive him, especially when he was suspicious of rena from the start.
