    I think the author just got lazy. It seemed like there wasn't much effort put in to think of new brilliant plans. Do you think they fell into a depression after killing L?

    maybe he decided(on a flip of a coin) that light had to lose,that he had too much bad karma.after killing L,ohba couldnt think of a better way to kill off light other than near and mello.
    light should have got the eyes...would have actually lengthened his lifespan.

    It was editorial tampering. There was an interview after the ending of Death Note in which the editor basically admitted that he told Ohba Light had to lose.
