L is obviously not Japanese. The letter "L" can't even be pronounced by Japanese, let alone it be included in the Japanese alphabet.

^yeah exactly L is not even in the Japanese alphabet......L couldn't have been in Japan because he went to Wammy's house in Britain I think so maybe he lived there....

In book 13 it is said L Lawliet is Dutch, as is his name,
And Matt is an american but grew up in japan and a fact about him is that he thinks american women are vain (i might be wrong the scans i read some time ago were badly done and i lost them with the computer reformation)

no one has an accent in the anime,considering that they are all not japanese (except light and misa)

I can't even distinguish the people's accent, they all sound the same even the FBI head and the american president....this is all because I'm not japanese....

But since he was picked up by Wammy into the orphanage at a young age,
and had lived in England for 5 years,
he's likely a British citizen.
