Thread: Anime Episode 21 Discussion. <SPOILERS.>

Wow. So, we finally get Misa learning about Rem again. YAY! But, this episode seems weirder than the manga for some reason. Does anyone else remember evil Kira threatening on killing Misa ever in the manga?

And, can anyone explain to me the logic of why in the beginning of the episode that Evil Kira wanted to marry Misa, have the trophy wife, and then kill her? Doesn't that sound counter-productive?

Okay, I admit, I might be overreacting cause I've only read this part of the manga once [for obvious reasons-- it's one slow ass boring part]. But yea, is the anime different from the manga at this point?

It was pretty close to the manga. The threat to Misa didn't come about in the manga the way it did in the anime. In the manga, Higuchi only says he'll kill Misa along with the other Yotsuba people as a precation once the investigation team enacts their plan and has him on the run. But that was bizarre, how in the anime he just says he'll kill Misa for no apparent reason while talking with Rem. I can only say that it was either a mistranslation, or it was done to make Higuchi more vile. But aside from that, the only other major difference was Higuchi getting on top of Misa in the car after Misa tells him she's the second Kira.

Yeah I was thinking that was pretty odd as well.

Another thing which struck me as odd was how Rem used a scrap of the paper to let Misa see her, but it didn't bring back her memories. And yet Light's plan hinged on the fact that once he touched the Note again, he would regain his memories.

I know the manga played out in the same way, but I didn't notice it being weird there. Guess I just didn't think of it. Anybody got a way to clear that up for me?

As I understand it, in order to regain your memories once you forefeit ownership you have to regain ownnership of the DN you gave up, or at least of a DN associated with the one you originally used. While in contact with a piece of that DN however, you do regain your memories but only while you are in contact with said piece of paper. Once you do touch a DN though, you can see the Shinigami attached to it from thereon, or at least until you should forefeit ownership again. This is why Rem touching Misa with a piece of the DN briefly didn't return her memories, but let her see Rem. Also, if you remember when L and Light caught Higuchi, Light regained his memories while touching the DN, but since Higuchi was still owner of the book, Light only kept his memories while touching the DN. Of course, he slyly proceeded to write Higuchi's name on a piece of DN in his watch and then swallow the piece, and once Higuchi died ownership reverted to Light, so he kept his memories. Another instance was during the Near/Mello arc, when one of Mello's cronies made the deal for the Shinigami eyes. Light was scared that a photo of himself would be seen by the guy with the Shinigami eyes (or something along those lines), so he forefeited his DN ownership. However, he kept a DN strapped to him under a girdle, so he was always in contact with the DN, and didn't lose his memories.


That was a lot longer than I intended, but hopefully that explained it.

No, that doesn't work. If you regain your memories for the amount of time that you are in contact with the note, then lose them again once you stop touching it, then that would mean that Light would have had to keep holding the note the entire time he sneakily wrote the name, and waited for the guy to die. Otherwise he would have lost them and regained them again, and that didn't happen. Also, it would mean that when Misa was touched by the note, she would have had a brief flash of remembering all her memories which also would have disappeared really quickly. That didn't happen either.

In fact, can you imagine how much of a mindfuck it would be if that was true, touching then dropping then touching then dropping the note? Doesn't work. As for the whole Mello thing you mentioned, I don't really remember the specifics of that too well.

But... that's exactly what happened; Light held the DN while writing Higuchi's name, and ownership transfered to him. Go back and read chapters 53-54. Actually, the only thing I was unsure of was whether just touching a piece of the Death Note returns your memories, and I don't believe it does.

I guess you're right. But still, then how come Misa's memories didn't return for two seconds then disappear again?

It's in chapter 71.

It wasn't her Death Note. It was a piece from the Death Note she never owned.

But Rem was haunting it....
