Default Looking back on it, the first movie was absolutely terrible

    Let's consider:

    a) Terrible acting
    b) Terrible writing
    c) What the fuck was L doing with the time blocks? The manga did a much better job with that, simply saying "Oh, he's killing people during school hours".
    d) The final scene was incredibly poorly gone. L walks out, Light stands there glaring at him, and L starts eating chips like an idiot, as if to say, "Look at me! I'm eating chips! Fuck you!". It was terribly done.
    e) Those were some pretty shitty fake heart attacks
    f) Misa was completely wasted in the movie

The movie was abysmal. There's no excusing it. For starters, the guy who played Light cannot act. I tolerated him during Battle Royale, but he was absolutely unbearable here. He's horrible at playing villains, too...he was okay in Battle Royale because his character was a whiny good guy...but he was horrible as Light. His "acting" during his final scene with Ryuk made me want to vomit.

I've seen some damn good Japanese movies before. Quality Japanese cinema didn't end with Kurosawa, talented directors like Takeshi Kitano are still getting work. The Twilight Samurai is one of the best films of the decade. But damn are the Japanese good at screwing up great concepts.

The movie was terrible. Terrible. The only person who did anything that remotely resembled a decent job was the actor who played L, simply because he emulated the manga character half decently.

The poster was damn good. That's the best thing I can say about the movie.

    Jesus.

finally someone else that agrees with me. I hate the part where L acts more like a kid and less like a calm genius detective. The movie was corny from start till the end

I totally agree with the topic starter. when i first watched the movie, i had to stop because i couldn't bear it anymore. The part where he wrote lind L. taylors name was horribly done, in the manga ( and anime for that mater) he wrote it as if he was mad, but in the movie he did it a letter at a time, it was bullshit. Then i watched the rest and it's equally disapointing, specially the end. And the time flow of the movie is retarded, i can only say this movie is not for a DN fan. i would give it a -10 since it sucks so much.

If it's as bad as you say it is i guess we'll just have to wait for the trashy americanised version to come out... From the sounds of it this might be one japanese movie they can rip off and make the re-make better than the original!
Yeah, don't bother with it. It's insultingly bad.

The American remake may be good if they use the manga as source material instead of the film.

I didn't mind the movie, but I have a hard time disliking things...plus I need to read the manga.

Anyway, I doubt that an American remake will be any better, and I have a strong feeling that the manga will not be used as source material.

I mean... C'mon, America remakes things but it doesn't follow the original source piece-by-piece.

Did you see The Departed? It was very similar to the original, Infernal Affairs. Unfortunately, I suspect Death Note won't fall into Martin Scorsese's hands.

I will simply say... The amount of movies I've seen is comparable to the chances of a baby learning to walk within the first three months.

Yes, it's that bad. But anyway, not all movies are fortunate enough to fall into the hands of a good director. Just as long as they don't dub Death Note...*Shudders.*

I thought i am the only one dislike Light and L in the movie...
    1. Light is too childish than a genius, L's bang bang bang's stuff ruins his image (at least to me).
    2. The buses scene and the subway scene is badly done...
The only one good thing is Raye Penber, he is just as retard as in the manga....

Well, I woin`t lose a word about acting,
but there are some things you should consider:
C)L showed the police informations, which if Kira couldn`t ignore, so L would know if the police force`s information can be seen by Kira
    d) you know what chips he ate?, the chips light ate while killing people with this small Tv, because he was watched.
e)How does look in reality, never seen one
f)Misa has to be introduced in the first movie somehow, but she can`t seem too importent at first

IMO, Light seemed too emotional in the movie. The manga depicts Light almost emotionless and a little psychotic. Also, even though L states the murder was done by a genius, Light sure doesnt act as one. Too me, he's more goofy in the movie.
