it was definately a twist no one expected, heck i barely understood all that blabber of the switching of the notebooks. also i think the author kinda dumbed kira down at the end, he would always have a backup plan if his original plan failed, like getting the eyes at the last moment. i believe he should have done so but hidden the fact he has the eyes, it would have save his life at least even if he lost half his remaining. that was his biggest mistake. so sad to see him die pathetically, well it was a good series i give it that.

Yes, that was the implication, and that's how it should have happened. I still say that the ending could have been redeemed if we had a couple more pages...after we see the praying girl, we see a view of the shinigami world...then we see a shinigami sitting in front of one of those Earth-viewer thingies...then we see him from the side, and, on the last page, a full page view of him from the front. It's Light, of course, with an apple in one hand and a Death Note in the other, saying, "Humans are...interesting".

    That would have kicked ass.

You know, that theory Matsuda had in the final chapter, about Near killing Mikami...obviously it's true. However, have any of you considered that Near might have killed Light as well? It would explain his breakdown and stupidity perfectly, and it would make sense, given Near's character. He could have written, "Light Yagami: Comes to [name of warehouse] on [date of meeting]. Confesses to being Kira after his plan fails and has a mental breakdown. Dies after begging the shinigami to kill the others there.", or something like that.

hmm interesting i never thought of that. he could have written lights name and making him loose pathetically for his own amusement, since he had the real death note. well i still think making an exact copy of the book was pretty stupid and impossible.

Yeah in Walt Disney's movie, but in real life that is not the same cliché shit. The problem was Death Note has a shonen ending but all the manga looks like a seinen manga. I explain, Death Note was published on a shonen magazine, so the editor wants (the author said in VOL. 13 I think) a shonen ending (bad can't win at the end, people like butterflies) even if Death Note was more mature than this cliché (that's why I said it's look like a seinen).

That's why I regret that DN wasn't published on a seinen magazine. The ending could be totally different and better. This manga deserved a so much better ending.

ps : the scenarist states that she doesn't hate Raïto/Light Yagami, she likes his character.

My favorites : Berserk, Akira, Monster, Battle Angel Alita, Shamo, 20th Century Boys, Real, Say Hello To Black Jack, GTO, Death Note, Blade Of The Immortal, Vagabond, Quartier Lointain, Hajime No Ippo, Slam Dunk, Dorohedoro, Gantz, Eden, Glaucos.

In all fairness, there were so many signs that light had to die at the end of the manga and that an L character would have to beat him,

I mean the whole use of the first 20 chapters saying how when Light dies and the whole instance of the Light having to live a long time in order to rule, it seemed long drawn out,
And the whole use of Lind L. Taylor sorta foreshadowed how Light would act rashly and when he saw almost certain victory in his actions, like when he says victory was his those five seconds before everyone was supposed to die,

and if it was a seinen manga, it would probably be drawn out more but with the same results, I mean even Gantz and Heaven's Door had a somewhat bright ending to a scenario of events (nt entirely sure about heaven's door because I can't find chapters 13 - 21 anywhere, but oh well),
Even if Light did kill Near in a seinen, There would be something else that would inevitably happen in the warehouse, mind you it would probably be a bit better of an ending but it had to happen
that or somethign, in the seinen, it would probably come down to Near having to shoot Light in a melodramatic sequence as Ryuk saw it and wrote it just before it happened, and it would probably be a little more like when Kurono gets back to Gantz after Kato dies (gantz ref.) but you know mostly because Near had to kill and he would feel like he lost like he said about having to kill Kira with hs own hands like maybe 20 chapters before the last chapter

but yeah, I kinda expected the ending to be similar to what happened, except, the latter part of the Ryuk speech should have been different, and the very last part of the last chapter I think should have made a little more sense than it did or at least expand a little more on it,
I\'m like Neo but better, cuz I actually know Kung FU and I can kick ass

Gantz doesn't have a bright ending. At this point, it's pure darkness.

Light could have won had it been a seinen.

the ending sucked, it could have been almost entirely redeemed if it had one panel at the very end of light as a shinigami

I think the way Death Note ended was rather disappointing and uninteresting when compared to the rest of the series.

Throughout the manga, you see Light as an extremely intelligent person and I definitely wouldn't expect him to act like that when backed into a corner. I'd see him trying to figure a way out of the situation rather than just breaking down or admitting everything.

I might be able to see this ending if there had been any clue that he was starting to regret his actions, but he doesn't, so it doesn't really make sense.

It seems more like the author got bored and just wrapped it up without bothering to keep his characters in character.

I think the ending should've been the same, except without the high amount of pathetic behavior Light exhibits.

It would've been nice if Light had won as Kira, because that would be way different and more interesting, but with the way it's set up, Near already has him cornered, so it couldn't really end another way.
