DC++ Guide by eos for StopTazmo

    Hello people

    eos here

So you wanna join us on the stoptazmo dc hub?

    Well... cool!

Id just like to remind you that there are some rules at the hub, just like on the forum.

The rules are divided into 3 different sections

    Behavior
    Respect the Ops & Mods
Its a hub with people from all over the world, so dont expect instant answers have patience.
    Be nice to each other
    Use commonsense when asking
    Please no l33t speak
Whatever people have told you, all caps is rude
It seems like people dont know the difference between polite and rude, so to chalk it up, NO overly offensive trash talking on the hub

    Sharing

No Child/animal/necro/whatever sick form of movies/pictures. I will gladly report you to the police.
No installations directory sharing (its useless data for everyone else than you, so dont share it)
    No partial downloads
    No "my documents" sharing
    Sharing is caring
Since people dont seem to understand a hint, its now required to share to stay on the hub.
Share something, it will be easier for you to download from people if you do.
    Share the stuff you download.

    Contact of Ops/Mods

Contact one of the persons that have a key infront of their names or contact me by pm here. I will get back to you. remember its good if you use the forum nick for your hub nick, then i can pm you here.

Enough serious stuff, here is the guide

Description : write what kind of stuff youre going to share, my example is manga, cause its a manga hub that we are going to connect to.

Line speed: Set the speed that your connection can upload with, it has absolutely no effect on your download or upload, its just information for the people looking to download something from you

    5. Connection settings!

This is the second most important part.

There are 4 modes to choose between. Depending on your equipment (pc, router, modem, connection, bla bla bla ), you have to choose one of these.

The main difference between these modes is that the first 3 give you complete access to every user on the hub, where the fourth (mode 4 passive) denies you access to users that use the same mode (mode 4 passive), at the same time when using passive (mode 4), most likely you wont be able to get search working as good as it could.

    Mode 1 - Direct Connection

Mode 2 - Firewall with UPnP

Mode 3 - Firewall with manual port forwarding

    Mode 4 - Passive

For configuring your connection look at this guide.

    You’re passive!?
    What does that mean

That means that you couldn’t get dc++ to work in active mode so you’ve put it in passive, that means that you can’t connect to some people and you’re not getting the most out of DC++

I’m assuming if you’re reading this tutorial you already know your settings are passive or that they won’t work on active and want to know why / fix it.

    So here you go

    ----------

    Disable any firewalls
This is the most common reason people can’t go active as it blocks data it shouldn’t, as is the nature of a firewall
"But I don’t have a firewall" you might say

Then the answer is, you have a router

I’ve run across quite a few people who have argued with me that they only have a modem
But if your modem has more than one place for a computer to connect, then it has a router

It’s a modems job to get the internet ready for your computer
It’s the routers job to split the connection up between many computers

    ---Explanation--
Basically your computer uses two things to send data, IP addresses and ports

Your router takes the IP address that is the one you’re paying for and makes little mini addresses to manage, think of it as an IP address being a country, and a port being ports on the sea side and data being the docks, information needs to know what computer to go to and where on the computers ports to go.
So say AIM messenger uses port 53, and you have 3 computers running aim, the router gets ports and juggles them around and basically makes shit work

But here dc++ needs you to open a port on the router to say
Your router if anything comes to you here on this port, direct it straight to me, you open a port to be forwarded to your machine

Most applications have to juggle ports (with UDNP) and thus don’t get the max out of their connections or randomly don’t connect at all (ever have an aim file transfer that just won’t work) this tutorial's knowledge on port forwarding can be applied to anything. It’s just some programs want you to tell them which ports are free for THEM to send data to and receive etc. and some have the ports set, but .. ..
    --/explanation--

    --Pre step--
If you don’t know if you have a router or not
Go to start > run > command > ipconfig

If you see something that says "default gateway" this is your router

You can type it into your web browser to access it, but of course you won’t know what to do
But note its brand and head to the first step

    --Step 1 --
    Go to http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm
    And select your router model
Or at least something close to it (like if you don’t know if you have linksys 0001, or linksys 0002) but look on the box and see if you can figure it out as this site will walk you through it step by step with pictures

    --Step 2--
Select the application (dc++) from the list

    --Step 3--
Follow its step by step procedure

Yes I could have just given you a link to it, but I thought you'd enjoy the explanation =p

if everything fails in this part, choose passive and come and ask on the hub. but be warned, bitching about your problems is a sure way to get the wrath of the hub on your neck, just be polite and we will gladly help you.

    Choose add folder

select the folder / folders you want to share with the rest of the hub

for each single folder you get the option of giving it a unique name, most of the time just let the name be.

When you clik okay to the share name, it starts to hash the files just click "run in background"

this is how it looks with a single directory shared.

When you are done adding folders to your share. its time for the next tab.

For the love of something, share, the hub will die if you people dont start sharing.

As a minimum share what you download.

and the line "but i dont have anything" is a waste of your time, so dont bother.
